Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

I see that you are an "admistrator" and thought that you might be able to pursue this idea with the SD folks that bring us this forum.

Could a separate forum area for Electronics be considered? (as related to schamatics, amp. building, choice of tubes, schematics, construction techniques, soldering, grounding, electronics safety, pickup winding, etc, etc)

I know that this would overlap the other categories ( e.g. Pickup Lounge and Amplifier Central, etc) but there are so many electronics based questions/discussions posted that it would seem like a logical category to consider.

Just a thought.
Hopefully others will read and comment.
If I'm "out of line" here, I' apologize.
If this proposal is not viewed as being a good idea, so be it.
The forum will still remain as great as it always has been.

Many, many thanks to all the "regulars" that take so much of their time to help others.

Your consideration of this idea is appreciated. (even if you only need 30 seconds to consider it :laugh2:)

Mixed feelings

It's an interesting suggestion but I'm kind of ambivalent about the idea.

IME on other boards, specialty categories like that don't attract anything near all the threads on the subject. It just ends up splitting the discussion across categories and irks obsessive compulsive folks like me because of the new off-topic threads. :cussing:

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

We're always open to new ideas. Let's see if this flies. I"m kinda with Alec in that I've never liked boards that had too many sections.

Ex. The Gear Page. I love the forum, but I only spend time in two or three areas. I sometimes wonder what all I'm missing. :)

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

Thanks for the responses so far.

Possibly attempting to "simplify" postings by adding a new category will only result in being more complicated ??

I hope that others respond so that we have a better representation of comments regarding this idea. It would be interesting and might help in considering the proposal.

Scott F - Thank you for "being open" to the concept.

I think these fall under the Amps and Pickups sections, just fine.

If we add another section, I think it should be something like "Music Discussion."

But we do enough of that in 'off topic' don't we?

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

Yeah, but it would help unclutter OT maybe isolate where most of the 'incidents' occur.

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

I think that the topics mentioned are covered fine by other areas.

The problem with specializing too much is that people do not always check all of the room. Your questions have a much higher probability of rapid responses when there are fewer rooms available.

Case in point: Frequently, when someone wants a quicker response, they'll post a question in the SoundRoom that would have fit better elsewhere. Why? Because, on average, there are more people reading threads there than in the other rooms.

Tips & Clips is a GREAT room, but it is not frequented as much. As such, we have TWO threads in the SoundRoom as I type this that are better suited for T&C. C'est la vie.

It might be time to nuke the TeleProject, though. That's over a year old.;)

Maybe an Emo Phillips and Steven Wright appreciation room, though.;)

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

We should have a seperate room for the guy who keeps asking for solutions to his Floyd Rose problems! It could be called,

Noob Floyd Rose crisis room!

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

We should have a new forum for Artie and all the questions he gets about wiring and schematics. :D

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

I sort of agree with Alec and Scott about this forum being more appealing, broken into less categories. It's what keeps the place active and interesting.
I think it was a good idea to separate amps/fx from guitars, but that's about it.

Personally, I like it when people post technical stuff in the guitar, amp, and pickup sections, because I learn more. At least when it's in one of those 3 categories, it gets seen quickly by more people.......and threads have questions answered in minutes, not days.

The I'd really become uppity and pretentious. :D

On one hand, I like the basic idea of an electronics forum, but on the other hand, I like the basic simplicity of this forum. I've seen forums that cover a lot less ground than we do here, and have twenty or more sub-catagories. This forum is layed out just about perfect. We have "pups", guitars, amps & pedals, music discussion, and "everything else".

Also, I'd be afraid that newbies might be confused as to where to post a question. If you wanted to know how to wire a pickup in parallel, would that be pickups or electronics?

I could go either way on this, but I'd probably lean towards keeping it as it is.

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

if it aint broken.. you know the rest ;)

it's good that we consider ideas like these, but i genuinely think the forum is doing just fine on this front! it means that one person who knows the answer to your question is much more likely to find it with fewer rooms :)

Re: Scott_F Proposal for new forum category

It's a cool idea but I also prefer few rooms.

It's good enough as it is but maybe we could try it out for a few months.

What I really think we need are more stickies. For instance, in the OT general rules for behaviour, in the guitar room what to do with a floyd or how to block your trem.

Sure I know there are vaulted discussions but noobs don't check that out often. A good compromise would be to at least have quick links in a sticky to those topics.

Just my 2cts.
