When spraying deoxidizer or any type of cleaner like that to fix scratchy pots is their special way to do it? Like do you just spray on the back of the pots when you open up the guitars backplate? or do you open up the pots and spray, or is their any special location you should spray?

Where the opening is where the terminals are, just spray a very small amount of "Deoxit" or contact cleaner in there and rotate the pot a whole bunch..

Keep in mind that contact cleaner and a product like Caig Labs Deoxit are two completely different products, that are used in different ways. With either, you want to spray into the slot shown by the "finger":

With contact cleaner, you want to spray a fair amount. Let it drip out and evaporate, and turn the pot back and forth while spraying.

With Deoxit, (which I think is a superior product), you spray a very small amount, then work the shaft back and forth a few times. The Deoxit will be a bit oily and will stay inside the pot. Some may drip out, but just wipe it off.
