Screamin' Demon for metal?

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

It only seems to work for the Dokken/Lynchmob sort of metal :smack:

I'd say it would be fine...but let's see what an actual user has to say!

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

I use mine in a Hamer for hard rock, but I think that it can definately do metal. It has lots of chunk in the lows ans scream in the highs. If your amp's hot enough, it could pull off the 80's metal thing nicely.

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

Should work fine with a high gain amp or distortion box. To me it sounds "percussive" and the moderate output and bass should keep the sound from turning into mush.

I think Scott Ian from Anthrax used the Demon for a while before switching to the Custom Shop "El Diablo"

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

It works fine if you are willing to let you amp provide the gain. It's not a high output pickup, but tonally, its articulate and percussive nature make it ideal palm-muted rhythms and clear lead tones.

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

if you throw enough gain to it, the pup will definately work for metal. if you dont have a high gain rig or if your neck pickup is higher output, you might want to try the distortion or full shred. the demon works well with a jazz (neck) but i wouldn't want to pair it with anything else b/c it is such low output.

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

Do you think that maybe George designed the pickup to be a little lower output so that he could push the amp harder?

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

George had been using the SD Distortion thru his Dokken days, which is a higher-ouput pickup. He says he wanted to harness the tonal richness of a lower output pickup while retaining some of the gain of the higher output pickup.

I've used mine with a PGn and an APHn with excellent results.

Agreed (in theory). I think you could match up a Demon with a lot of different lower output humbuckers. You could throw the 59n in that list of "probably sounds good with a Demon."

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

Remember that you'll still need a high gain amp to bring the gain.

As for versatility, because of it's output it's well suited for just about any kind of hard rock, and it'll even clean up well. Simply roll back the volume and tone a bit and the thing cleans up rather well. It'll always be a little chimey, though, so just be aware of the highs.

Re: Screamin' Demon for metal?

I play Megadeth, Metallica, Talisman and more with the Demon without any problem at all. Think that Chris Ammot of Arch Enemy uses one.
He has that deep sound behind the distortion if you listen carefully, he rocks!
