Screamin' Demon Questions...

Hello Everyone... Had a few questions about the SH12.

1. Do the Hex screws affect the tone of the pickup ?
2. Would placing a nickel cover tame it ? i.e. Less output ? Less high's?
3. Can anyone compare this pickup to a JB or C5?

I recently picked up one on Ebay and I'm trying to get an idea of what to expect. I've been experimenting with the JB and C5 in my V and was looking for something different. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 59n and a TB12 in a Gibson V.
I thought the Demon was much too shrill for that guitar.
I ended up replacing the pickups with an APn and a CC, but your mileage may vary.

The SH-12 is pretty toppy and very direct in your face with brightness and alot of tight crunch,but yet cleans up very well....I put all screws on both sides of mine and it warmed it up alot and made it alot better...I still have this pickup in my rarely used black strat that has the SD/APS2/APS2 in it...

It's a very mis-leadingly named pickup. It doesn't scream, and it sure as hell isn't demonic.

It screams alot of highend though....And it crunches....Reminds me alot of the Dimarzio Fred,but I Like the Fred pickup better..

What do like better about Fred? Is it smoother on top? More bottom?

The Demon sounds great in the right guitar wood. Mahogany especially. It has an insane growl with plenty of chug and bite. But I do think the Screamin needs to come off of the name.

What do like better about Fred? Is it smoother on top? More bottom?

It has mismatched coils and it's the harmonics and tight crunch I Like....

To me the SD has a bit of a PAF flair gone hi-fi. It's not as high output as the JB or C5, but it does still "scream." I refer to the screaming part as its ability to grab onto harmonics and not let go. For its output it can be a touchy pickup. I have no experience with the C5, but compared to the JB the SD offers plenty of crunch yet backs off much better than the JB. The tone of the SD feels more vocal to me as well, yet it seems to be every bit as cutting as the JB.

The JB has this eq hump in the mids I hate...Kinda like the mid hump we hate with a Tube Scremer pedal...

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try using a 250k pot to tame the highs a bit. Also, the pickup has nickel cover on it, so this may mellow the pu overall. I'll let you know what it sounds like after a "test" drive.

Yeah...would agree. It's not the output that screams....it's the tone. And a hi-fi PAF type tone is exactly how I would describe it. Actually SDs description is dead on too. It does have less bite on the top end and more growl in the lower mids.....I can't really put it into words but you'll know it as soon as you put it in your guitar....really cool vocal pickup.


I put it in my Alder bodied neck-thru superstrat w/ maple neck and rosewood fingerboard and it really sang.

I have a Demon in the Bridge Position of my Framus Camarillo (swamp ash body with maple top, maple neck and ebony fretboard) and it just kicks ass! I like the growl of it and it's somekind aggressive sound...
I'm thinking of putting a Demon in my Caparison Dellinger (mahogany body, maple neck and ebony fretboard), cause I don't like the stock bridge Pup and the EMG Hz 4 i put in doesn't seem to be the right choice for me, actually don't know why... just doesn't really fit to my "british" sound...

By the way, I find the neck pup of my Dellinger a bit muddy and lifeless... I want some kind of singlecoilish humbucker sound^^ thought of a Duckbucker or Vintage Rails or Quarter Pound... what would be your recommendation?

if you like the Demon , you may want to try a Jazz neck .
Jazz neck = Demon for neck

The Dellinger is a HSS guitar so it will be very difficult to put a Jazz into the neck position...

So, I decided to go with a duckbucker in the neckposition, but I am still not sure what to put in the Bridge Position...

First of all the guitar is a Caparison Dellinger I, HSS, mahogany body, maple Neck and ebony fretboard and a Floyd-Rose Tremolo.
What sound do I want? I want a warm clean and crunch sound and it should have enough power and clarity for metal riffs and rhythm work.
I'm playing everything from hard rock to heavy metal and my amp is a Framus Dragon, so I don't really need some kind of high-output monster like a Dimebucker.
What I found out is that I don't really like Pups with ceramic magnets...
I got a Demon in my other guitar and I'm very pleased with it, but I'm not sure if it fits the Dellinger as well and so I was thinking bout the Custom 5.

So, what would be your choice for the bridge position?
