Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Anyone change the magnet in their bridge position Screamin Demon humbucker? Thinking about maybe putting an Alnico 8 in. How would that compare to its existing Alnico 5? Thoughts?

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

The Demon 8 is a rocker. The A8 gives it more output, increases the midrange and gives it a bolder, slightly rounder top end than the stock A5.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

What do you mean by slightly rounder top end? I went from the jb wich I felt had just slightly too much output and an almost forced mid honk. I love the demon for its clarity and cut but felt it could use just a touch more mids and output. I like the idea of gaining some output and mids with the a8 but would I be loosing any of its high end?

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

If you can imagine transplanting the slightly more fluid top end quality of the JB onto the Demon and smoothing out that upper-mid spike (or "honk") that you didn't like about the JB, that's similar to what the A8 will do to the Demon. The A8 will increase the low-mids and mid-mids, which really evens out the EQ, but it will still have just enough of that "A5" tonality to keep the top end from getting lost and allow it to cut through well. The Demon's wind is particularly great for the A8 because it's not a super-hot pickup to begin with and has a naturally open, semi-bright quality that plays very well with the A8's character.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Ok this sounds awesome. So next question: Where does one buy aftermarket humbucker magnets?

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

ebay or addiction-fx.com

Make sure the magnet is "charged" when you buy it

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Imagine an underwound Custom 8 with a row of Allen head screws.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

+1 to all that has been said. The Demon is a great all-around pup that is very amenable to mag swaps. The A8 mag will get you exactly what you want. You won't necessarily lose the highs, but they will be rounder/smoother/less piercing.

The Demon8 is such a superb bridge bucker.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

If you want something with more vintage texture and less output, an UOA5 is worth trying.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Awesome. Thanks all for the info. Now I just gotta get one online probably. Thanks for the offer LtKojak but I am in the States so I will probably order online off ebay or something. Whats the difference between a rough magnet and a smooth magnet? Anything?

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

A rough magnet produces a more complex magnetic field, rounding the highs out a bit. The polished magnet makes them a bit tighter.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Ok im back. After replacing the magnet with the A8 which I loved, I couldn't help myself but keep tweaking. I felt that the high strings were still a tad too spikey and shrill and kept seeming to overpower everything else in the mix so I swapped out the hex head screws for flat head screws to again try to tame the piercing highs this thing generates. Now I feel the pickup is just slightly different and I can't seem to put words to it. Without swapping flat heads back to hex and back and forth etc. I am wondering if anyone else has done the Screamin Demon A8 mod COMBINED with the hex screw swap out as well. How would you describe that pickup? Again its in an alder/maple superstrat with a floyd going through a TS7 and into Blackstar HT20 combo with Celestion Lynchback speaker. Thanks!

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Since you've clearly done it, maybe you can figure out to explain what you're dealing with there.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Never mind all. Swapped the hex heads back in and lowered the pickup. Since swapping in the A8 I never really tweaked with the height and it was wayyyy too high. Hence the spikey and piercing highs. Lowered the pup and tweaked the poles now it is better and I am happy. Thank you

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

I had a similar experience with an A8 Demon, I really didn't like what it did high end. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to resolve it by lowering the pickup as you did.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

Thats a great thought and I would love to hear what that heads up sounds like

you know, I've been holding off on buying that model from Arcane. I think things may be pushing me to branch out to more and more of the boutique winders. we'll see how that develops.

Re: Screamin Demon Trembucker Magnet Change

I'm curious why the urge to branch out to more boutique winders? The mr scary is enticing but it was just too expensive for me and there just wasn't enough said about it online for me to take the gamble of buying it. If you do end up buying some recorded samples would be interesting to hear.
