Screamin' Demon vs the Lawrence L-500L

My favorite pickup in my single p/u Strat is the Screamin' Demon Trembucker. Today, I put in a Bill Lawrence L500L in there and so far so good. I have not spent enough time with it, but I think it has a little less bottom, more of a mid hump and harmonic content that is => than the incumbent. Any other Demon or Lawrence users out there directly compare these two pickups? BTW, no wait on the BL, shipped within a couple of days, very fast email response and very nice to deal with.

Ask 9Finger, he uses both the Demon and Lawrences! He will give you the best opinion you will get off of here!

I'll probably end up putting the Screamin' Demon back in, but I enjoy experimenting. Those are both about 10K pickups with A5 magnets

You're first thoughts are pretty much bang on to what I would have said. The L500L is alot more articulate and cleaner sounding. They don't have the low end thump that most PAFish style pickups like the Demon will have. The L500L is alot tighter as far as note definition goes as well, this why there is comparitively less bass. Overall brightness they are about the same. I'd say the 500L is a little more balanced compared to a demon.

I'm curious what value pot you used as well. The L500L is designed to be used w/ a 250k pot. In a single bucker set w/ only 1 volume and no other controls, Bill would suggest using a 250 k pot w/ a 100/125k resistor on the lugs to get it to act the way it's "supposed" to. If you're using just a single 500k pot, I'd think that it would make it overly bright and lose alot of it's low end response.

I just soldered it to the 500K pot that I had in there, so yes, it's bright. I always end up putting the Demon back in anyway. That pickup, in that alder/maple/Floyd is tough to beat.

Man, I just don't know...I like the presence the Duncan has. I like the low end. I do think I'm bored with it. I like the L500-L articulation "tighter" is the right word, (thanks 9finger). I'm going to keep them both and obsessively swap them in and out. I do kinda like the 500k pots with humbuckers best.

I understand that logic. But also understand that the L500L was designed to be used w/ 250K audio taper pots. Normally more than 1. Going down to a 250k pot will decrease the brightness, increase the bass response, but still retain the tightness. Right now, only using 1 pot at 500k, the pickup is actually seeing a load of 1meg and that's REALLY bright for a 500L.

Gotach, I just ordered a few 250K pots. Thank you for explaining it to me. I am becoming rather fond of this L500-L

After a few days of trials and pot changes, I think I like the 250K pot and the L500-L, but I prefer the Screamin' Demon Trembucker and a 500k pot the best for that particular instrument. The Lawrence is a definite keeper pickup, it will have a home in a new project instrument.
