SCUMBACK SPEAKERS / Southbay Amps + PROPS TO JIM

I had to write a post about my experience with Scumback speakers.

I have been in regular contact with Jim from Southbay Ampworks, makers of the Scumback speakers. I was talking with him recently about purchasing a set of old Celestion G12-65's from him. He INSISTED we meet and demo so I can find my sound.

He set up 2 cabs with 4 sets of stereo pairs in 8 ohms Parallel. These included Scumbacks (at MY REQUEST, NOT Jim's) and the vintage sets of Celestions. I brought a friend with me so I had en extra set of ears.

Clearly, the WINNER with my Bogner Shiva was the Scumback H75-LHDC Lead Cones. WOW is all I can say. It felt like a hemi under my fingers. Big sound, even response, HUGE dynamics, loose feel, GORGEOUS overtimes, and it brought out the plexi side of the Shiva. Cleans were beautiful form jazzy to funky and chimey. Personally, I preferred the (2) H75-LHDC to the 55/75 mix for this particular amp - very even and balanced, let my fingers do the talking.

I have had some moments where my G12H30s were not always for me. The Scumbacks find the BEST qualities of the G12H30 and give you the even response WITHOUT the peaky sounds, in a mellow yet cutting tone. Truly a GB/V30 sort of tone and much, much more. Joe Perry style crunch a la Rocks, with the open tone and soft worn in feel, and a mellower cut than V30s / less ratty than GB's, tighter when louder / bigger sounding than the 65's. The speakers in the cab were NEW (10 hrs on them at best!)

I must apologize for the rust on my hands today, as my playing might not have done the speakers justice, but who cares? It was a treat! lol

I bought the G12-65's from him, and I will order the Scumbacks shortly as I dig up some extra bread! I will probably X-pattern the Scum's and the 65's.

I was thrilled as was my friend. IN FACT she thought the Scumbacks sounded FAR superior and preferred I buy them instead. Jim's dedication and enthusiasm towards his craft were amazing. You don't just buy Scumbacks, you buy a caring company with AMAZING tone. I finally know what all the rave reviews were about!

EDIT: I wrote this post listing the model number incorrectly. It should have read H75-LHDC, and I have adjusted to reflect this error with the correct model. Thanks.

I've heard great things about his speakers for sure, some say Scumbacks are the best (as far as modern day replicating of older classics anyways). Olin, if you spring for a set that you really like for your Shiva, I want to know what you go with and why (love what I have, but I'm always willing to try something new!) :)

what's the deal with the G12-65s?? i never hear much mention of them. my marshall 4x12 from 1979 (or so) is loaded with them but i don't get along with them all that well to be honest. some days i do other days i want to swap them out....it's odd. i guess i'm just a gool ol' V30 guy at heart.

The G12-65 was made to be a higher wattage version of a G12M Greenback...to be honest they sort of missed the mark but they did get some of the character of te GB tone in the 65's.

They have large dust cap do difuse some of the highs which wa a nice touch the problem however is that they are kind of lacking in the lows...they made the G12-65 with both a lead and bass cone but the problem is that to most people the lead cone lacks bottom while the bass cone lacks articulation.

All that said, I actually dig the G12-65's that Ive tried but truth be told they are not my fav Celestion...

If you like a more PLexi-ish tone, and want a sweeter, more balanced speaker than G12H30s - you would like the Scumback

Seeing as how you like the CL80 - which is somewhat of a "stiff" tone compared to what people would consider brown, then it might not be for you. I usually see the CL 80 as the "support" speaker, with the V30 being the bulk of the tone, and the CL80 there for meat. The V30 has more breakup, and a warmer feel comparitively. In a live situation you are more likely to mic the V30.

The Scum LDHC is very brown, very sweet, big, and punchy. The H55/75 models are very much in the vein of the Celestion G12H's. The LDHC is somewhat between a 65 and a V30.

65's are like a sweeter V30, with more of that brown break up. If you like Robben Ford, that is a good example of the brown side, but it has the smoothness that works with Fuchs type amps etc. They have punch and smoothness, without being as "Sterile" as some other speakers might seem.

I am VERY VERY happy with these speakers, the G12-65, mixed with the G12H30. I am considering the G12-65 with the Scum LDHC. I will email Jim and see what he thinks is the best mix.

Wow, great description, you've got me sold on an LDHC already :fing2:

You've got the right idea for how I'm using those speakers now. The CL-80 pretty much rounds out the frequencies on the V30, but you're right, the V30 is the main speaker I always mic.

I may have to seriously look into those speakers, thanks for the heads up :) Big, sweet and punchy is exactly what I want, I'm not sure what you considered "brown", but if I could get a bit more speaker movement than the CL-80, I'd definitely opt for it.
