SD and DiMarzio pickups in the same guitar?

Hello guys. I've posted this question in the "Dimarzio Twang King" section, but user J E C advised me to open a new topic for more replies, and here it is. So, I like the Seymour Duncan "Hot for Tele" STL-2 bridge pickup, but I also very much like the sound of DiMarzio "Twang King" neck pickup, so I am thinking about putting the two (I haven't bought any yet) in my tele. Are these two compatible, since I've read about SD and DM pickups being out of phase with each other, have different wire colours and whatnot?

I would appreciate all replies and thank you in advance.

Yeah they are compatible at the very worst you will have to swap the leads to correct a phasing issue. Just wire them up according to their respective color codes and if there is a phase issue trouble shoot from there. 99 percent of the time it can be fixed by just reversing 2 wires.

Thank you for a quick reply, Edgecrusher, I really appreciate it. :bigthumb:

Re: SD and DiMarzio pickups in the same guitar?

I seem to have a thing for mixing Duncans and Dimarzios. For a long time I had a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Dimarzio DP103 (PAF) in the neck of my Washburn HB-30 semi-hollow. They were a great combination, but recently pulled the DP103 and replaced it with a Duncan SH-2 Jazz. I found an Epi SG pro, one of the Korean made models, that has a fantastic neck and plays better than the Gibson SG I used to have (that one was stolen years ago), so I needed the Dimarzio for the neck position there. I put a Duncan SH-1 in the bridge position and upgraded the pots, caps, etc., and wired it for series/parallel and a phase switch. I also put covers on the SG pickups to keep that vintage look. I am extremely pleased with the results. Sounds great clean and distorted. I think I liked the Dimarzio better than the Jazz for the neck on the Washburn, though the Sh-2 is not bad at all.

I also have a Charvel/Jackson Model 4, from 1987. I put a Dimarzio Super Distortion3 in the bridge, a Duncan Hot Rails in the middle and a Dimarzio Chopper in the neck. They work very well together and provide a variety of tones that I am very happy with.

used to have a SH-5 in the bridge and a PAF Pro in the neck of a guidar I built years ago
and the neck was way louder than the bridge.

Whatever sounds right to you is right.

Used to run a C8 and Liquifire. Killer combo

Now I run an Invader and Liquifire. Never had a problem

I have done this a number of times. A really cool combination was a Tone Zone and Full Shred Bridge. That's now changed though for a Full Shred set.

I don't know the definitive answer to the question, but I can tell you that Duncan humbuckers and DiMarzio single coils will end up out of phase from each other if you don't swap leads on one of the two types. SD use the old-style Fender magnet orientation and wind direction for singles, while DMZ use the modern Fender style.

I believe SD/DMZ humbuckers would be in phase if used together, though.

Either way, the worst you will have to do to get the pickups in phase with each other is swap some leads.

Personally, I find that OOP makes the parallel settings at least somewhat interesting and useful. I almost never use the in-between switch settings unless the pickups are wired out of phase!
