SD Custom Bass Pup....

jaybonitrane

Snickerdoodle Milk
...has arrived!

Custom Ceramic Jazz 5n. 9.2k...ala Black Winter style for metal.
I wanted a tight hot dark cello tone with plenty of articulation to upgrade my Lakland Custom 5 string bass.
The SD custom shop said they have never done anything like this before.
This is truly a first invention and it looks nicer than the original SD custom stack which it replaces.
I'm very pleased with the quality.

The techs are getting ready to install the pup and reconnect the original Bartolini preamp.

Good luck with them.

The CS is great when it comes to doing stuff outside the box.

Re: SD Custom Bass Pup....

Well how does it sound? Certainly looks nifty, the bass black winter look.

Re: SD Custom Bass Pup....

How it sounds. ..

Compared to the CS Stack that was originally in there...
This pickup has more bottom end with a rich full tone and enough dark ceramic growl to raise the hair on a werewolf. It is extremely articulate and powerful ...2 things that a stack pup seems to be missing. If you have ever thought that a stack pup was failing on the high end then this is for you. Its like Black Winter but its for bass. I suppose they could make another one for 4 or 6 strings.
To accomplish my spec design the SD custom shop has wound a special magnet with heavy gauge Formvar wire and fit it all into a Jazz housing.
Use this number 200314 along with pics and a link to this thread to get things started if you want one...and be sure to mention number of strings for your bass as this a pickup number for 5 string Jazz neck position.
Putting this pickup into a less expensive bass would be like adding a war cannon to a life raft. However it could save money from the overall price of your rig if you wanted a heavy metal tone but didn't want a lot of expensive pedals on the floor to trip over.

Is it my idea or maybe the angle's picture, but they seem to cut the magnets a bit rough. :dunno:

The magnet is ceramic bar and those are just pole pieces...but they could be done in a different metal such as polished stainless or nickel coated if you order it that way.
