SD Jazz pups and cover squeal

I put a JB+Jazz set in my SG and the Jazz was really prone to cover squeals, I can damp it by resting my finger on the front.

I recently replaced it and the new one feeds back in exactly the same manner so I'm wondering if this is just normal for a covered Jazz pup, the JB is comparatively stable.

Re: SD Jazz pups and cover squeal

I had a covered Jazz that didn't squeal but I probably never tested the limits with real high gain. When I cover pups, I tape the slugs over with thin masking tape and wax the covers and haven't had an issue with microphonics yet from covering a pup. Having removed a cover from a JB, if memory serves, I had to heat the cover to pull it so there was ample wax under the cover. But maybe the Jazz is not wax potted as heavily and it sounds like that could be the case from your post. Plenty of Jazz fans so I'm sure they will chime in with more insight than I have to offer.

Re: SD Jazz pups and cover squeal

Yeah I'm thinking it's unlikely for two of the pups to have the exact same issue, you might be right about the Jazz not being as heavily potted as the JB.

Re: SD Jazz pups and cover squeal

I have never owned a covered Jazz. I have an uncovered Jazz set which gives me no problems at all but I can't be much help on a covered one. I have wax potted and even added covers and wax potted humbuckers before but never a Jazz.

never had that problem with mine.
Make sure the cover is well seated and possibly cushioned with a little wax and soldered securely in place.
Also, try filling the pickup cavity with closed cell foam.

Perhaps one day I'll be brave enough to crack open the pickup, dunno if my current soldering iron is up to the job though...
