SD Neck Invader broken coil

I was doing routine pickup swap, took out an invader set(Work fine before swap) measure their dc resistance. The bridge was okay(16.86k) but the neck didn't get any reading.

I did 3 things

1. Adjust pole piece to see if I'll get a reading and nothing.

2. I unsolder R&G wire to get an individual coil reading. From B&W I get 3.85k but R&G I get nothing.

3. Unwrapped the tape to check the wiring, the coil was covered in thick clear wax or shellac I'm not sure and the wiring was covered in white wax no dent or damage at all.

I'm no expert in guitar pickup so this is as far as I can do. I bought the pickup brand new last year and was working fine before I swap them. I didn't drop it and it wasn't near any magnetic field. The pickup was unsoldered and pull out slowly so I'm just puzzle what could've damaged it???

Can any expert here tell me what might have cause one coil to die? or anyway I can fix the dead coil? Any tip and comment appreciated!!! TY

The coil is fine, this pickup has a cap in the wiring across the coil that causes it to read that way.

Humm interesting.... never seen something like this before. But the bridge pickup seems different I can get a full reading on it without a problem so they build the neck invader differently?

Anyway, glad to hear it is not broken. I'm still waiting for my partsocaster to arrive and once I get it I'll try to read the output from the output jack to see if I can get a full reading.

Thank you for the interesting info.

Re: SD Neck Invader broken coil

its only the neck pickup for the invader pickup that has the cap, personally I am not a fan of the neck invader, maybe if it has some super distortion poles in it and a different magnet.

you still wont get a reading or much of one from the output jack of just the neck. put it in and plug the guitar in, it will work fine.

Re: SD Neck Invader broken coil

Yes you are right the pickup work but no reading from jack as well lol. I saw a few used sd neck invader on ebay in the past and they all have broken coil I guess they are all functioning pickup and the seller are unaware of the design.

I'm not too please with the invader neck on my new partsocast(alder body, maple neck/fb) but the bridge invader totally rock on this guitar. I might swap neck with 59 or jazz. what neck pu do you pair with invader bridge?

The cap is wired to to the plate from the lead, at least that's how they did it back in the day. I always thought it sounded far better with the cap yanked out.

Re: SD Neck Invader broken coil

You may want to play with the neck invader first to see if yo can get it to sound better, the cap screws make them sound muddy and undefined. Dimarzio super dist. Allen poles fit in and tighten up the sound and they are are available from dimarzio for -$10 or so. Add them to the bridge to for a less muddy tone.

Changing the ceramic magnet to an a4 or a5 will make it sound a better clean and magnets from fx addiction or mojotone are very cheap. Also taking the cap out is pretty easy and reversible. Just unwind the tape an unsolder or cut and retape.

The invader neck coils seem to be based on the jazz or fullshred neck and these changes will get you pretty close to a full shred neck, which is a good match for the invader if you want a very articulate clean neck.

If you want a different sound altogether I love the screamin demon in the neck, it's a little hotter and warmer but very balanced and full while still clear.

Doesn't the Invader have some kind of weird magnet setup? 3 Ceramics or something more complicated?
