SD Output Values

Hey all

This is my first post. I registered to this forum, so that i could ask where it was most appropriate.

I was scooting around the SD homepage, looking at the various pickup models. And until now i thought that the output was measured in the DC resistance. But it doesnt really seem to add up.

For example the JB has more DC resistance than the Dimebugger. I thought the Dimebugger was SUPER hot and the JB only Medium-hot.

And also the Alternative 8 has way more DC resistance than the Invader which i thought was SDs end all be all hot passive pickup. Could someone please enlighten me?

Re: SD Output Values

DC resistance is not = output

While a wind with a higher DC res has the potential to be higher in output, the Magnet is a very important part of the equation. The invader for example uses 3 ceramic magnets and huge poles to extract it´s over the top output from the same wind that the JB uses with an a5 magnet.

Re: SD Output Values

welcome to the forum!!

dc resistance is only one indicator of output and can be misleading if looked at in a vacuum. wire size, magnet type, pup construction, and many other factors influence the output of a pup.

if we look at two similar strat pups both a5 with similar winds and construction but one is 6k and the other reads 10k it is fairly safe to assume that the 10k will be hotter. if we look at two similar humbuckers, say the jazz bridge and jb both alnico 5 with typical construction, the 16k jb is going to be hotter than the 8k jazz.

rail designs and huge pole pieces will change things too

Hehehe, dimebugger ;)

Haha, yeah. Got me there. :27:

Soooo.... How can i see the relative output among the different SD buckers? Like on the dimarzio page they have a value for the output.

I'd like to see somewhere that maybe the JB is 100, then the invader is 130, the dime-"bugger" is 150, the custom is maybe 85 and so on. Or didnt they implement anything like that? Maybe someone already compiled a list like that, and i just didnt find it yet?

Re: SD Output Values

there is no list like that. its actually very tedious and almost impossible to get accurate results. the velocity and angle that you strike the string would have to be exactly the same each time along with every other factor involved besides the pup itself. once that was all done it would only be useful across that line of pups since im sure dimarzio, duncan, emg, bartolini, fralin etc... wouldnt use the same exact setups

after many years of playing ive found the differences in output between the invader and a distortion for example are less important than the tonal differences.

Re: SD Output Values

^^ good point about the output differences, esp. w/ todays amps that have more tan enough gain on tap to make even an acoustic sound brutal..

+1. Like most things relating to electric guitars, there's a lot of variables at work.
