SD Pegasus and Sentient: Inner and Outer coils

Gents, saw a discussion about getting SD pickups to do inner and outer coil combinations a few days ago. With a stock Peg and Sentient, what would you have to modify to make the pickups be in phase and hum cancelling on inner and outer coils settings? also, if you do make that modification, what does that do to phase and hum cancelling if you add a single coil inbetween?

Just to add here, I'm a huge fan of my EBMM Axis Super Sport, and use the hell out of the inner and outer coils positions; that's where the idea comes from.

You have a couple of questions I see here.

If you are flipping the magnet with the intent of using "inner coils" and "outer coils" and have those positions cancel hum, you'll need to look at the wiring diagram to determine if the diagram already takes care of electrically flipping the polarity (swapping B/W & R/G on a Duncan) to put everything in phase or if it need to be done. If you post your diagram we can determine if any modifications need to be done.

Regarding split Humbuckers with a center Single Coil, traditionally you split to the Stud coil (North) for both neck and bridge to combine with middle Single Coil (South). If one of the magnets is flipped, you'll have to split to the Screw Coil of that humbucker to retain hum cancellation (and do the appropriate wiring modification to keep it in phase)

Artie has posted so good reference diagrams.

Well, here is the article I wrote about it. You have to flip one of the magnets for it to work, though. I was also told there might be a green/black wire that is flipped in the diagram, but I don't have my guitar here to check. All positions are hum cancelling, and in phase.

Dave, sorry it took a while to return your message, I've been deployed with the Army, and am about to get home! Thanks very much for the post, and the blog post as well, that's exactly the one I was talking about!

Re: SD Pegasus and Sentient: Inner and Outer coils

No problem! If you have any other questions, just post them. I still use this wiring in 3 guitars, and it is, by far, my favorite.
