SD & PRS Pickups

Good morning everyone! I have a fast question for anyone that knows. Is there a SD equivalent to the different PRS pickups? If anyone knows please share this information! I would greatly appreciate it. The specific models I would like to have a similar SD pickup would be the following McCarty treble and bass pickups, PRS 250 treble and bass pickups, Dragon II treble and bass pickups, Santana MD pickups, and finally the new Al Dimeola 1957/2008 Pickups.

The McCarty pickups are in the 59 sort of realm. 250 pickups are pretty hot, sort of a custom meets distortion vibe to my ears. Dragon pickups are horrid to my ear, can't think of a DUncan equivalent. The Santanas remind me of the Pearly Gates. Havent had a chance to try the DiMeola pickups but he likes a moderately hot pickup with a strong treble curve if memory serves.

Actually the Dragon I's are decent. Very simlar to the Custom / 59 combo. The Dragon II's on the other hand are hit or miss. Probably closest to a CC / Alnico II Pro

Re: SD & PRS Pickups

I didn't think my McCarty pickups were close to a '59. The neck one close to a APH. The bridge one, I dunno, an overwound to death and potted with lava APH?

Re: SD & PRS Pickups

Does the SH-11 Alnic II Custom Custom seem to be the most popular with the PRS?

All I know is my Pearly Gates are to bright in the bridge and my Dragon I could be a little less middy... (It may compare to the SH-5?)

Is the SH-11 with the Alnico II magnet the correct cure for this?

Jazz in the neck is good... I like to attack it as if it were a single coil.
The Alnico II sounds super sweet there in the neck also, but I need that max chime.
I have not tried a PG in the neck yet... But I know over all any of those will sound good.

It's the bridge that I'm having trouble with... Trying to figure which Custom is right.
I believe that the SH-14 would be way too bright also... Oui?

I didn't mean to hijack your post Moonge... I just had to ask... Thanks...

I have 4 PRS guitars and I find they have different personalities.

1)The first thing I recommend before changing a pup is to remove the bright cap. It does more damage than good imo, especially if the complaint is the guitar being too bright

2) Some pieces of wood are just bright. My Cherryburst Cu22 is like this. I put a CC in the bridge, an A2P in the neck and added a resistor in parallel on the volume pot to knock it down to 250k. Love that guitar now. Others are nice and fat sounding like my natural Cu22 where I removed the bright cap, installed a standard 3way in place of the rotary and put a Brobucker in the bridge and a PG in the neck

Sounds to me like you should pull the bright cap and see where you stand. If its still way bright I would roll with a Seth (magic) or the CC depending on your tastes in output and midrange.

Re: SD & PRS Pickups

Thanks A-Tect.... and also for all the previous wiring help...
When I eventually scraped the 5 Way rotary... I went with 3 way 2 PP with splits.
Rewired and forgot all about the treble bleed... so I didn't install one. It's still very bright!

What is the Brobucker?

I have a set of DM 36th Aniv on order also... Oh, I traded those Nortons that I had... we talked about before.

I'm gonna try a SH-11... don't have much time to be switching things about!
Also have a AnII neck already... that might sound sweet together.

Re: SD & PRS Pickups

In my CU 24 I run a 59 (preferably with an Alnico 2 magnet) and a Custom Shop 78.

Like Architect said the treble bleed cap MUST go if you want a fatter sound. I went a step further (similiar to Architect) and put a 250K pot in the tone circuit.

The Brobucker is the original Seymour Duncan User Group Forum pup. It is an overwound PAF with an aged magnet. It sounds, to my ears, like a more raw/less compressed JB. Think JB meets Custom 5. A lot of people think it does the AC/DC thing really well.

Lots and lots of guys like the Custom Custom because it is fat sounding and flattens/fattens out the response of a PRS.

Re: SD & PRS Pickups

I'm wanting to fatten things up... But I still want my Jazz neck to be as chimey and Straty as possible.
I've gone with two Volumes now so I could change just the bridge pot if I wanted to. Things are coming together here... lol and now, of course instead of spending all this money on buying so many extra pickups...
I could now just change a pot and add a resistor.

I have a lot of pickups now... I need to start recording them for demos.

So I'm anxious to hear the CC for the bridge.. and in combo with the Jazz or maybe AnII.
Have DM Air Norton/Norton in there now... having fun with that, splitting.

Just found the 2 HB 2 Vol 3 Way 2 PP Series/Parallel diagram...

Wonder if Parallel is the way to go instead of splitting. Will try... it goes on and on.
