SD P'up similar to Fred?

Anyone know what a DiMarzio Fred is similar to in the Duncan line?

Heard some tracks done with a Fred through a modeler and it seemed to mesh nicely. Nothing against DiMarzio, just been a Duncan devotee for several decades.

Re: SD P'up similar to Fred?

Short answer is there is no equivalent, but if I had to pick one

I'm really goin' out on a limb here...

A Screamin Demon with an A8

You'll get the tightness and medium output of the Demon, with the mids and added aggression of the A8

Re: SD P'up similar to Fred?

Yes, I noticed no, 10k-ish A5's in Duncans lineup. Seems like an odd oversight for a company that covers the bases so thoroughly. Wonder if there's patent thing going on?

Re: SD P'up similar to Fred?

Yep there is. The Fred has 2 coils out of different guage wire, basically like a hybrid. I am not sure on the exact specs but I am sure someone here will fill you in soon enough :)

Re: SD P'up similar to Fred?

naw no patent thing on coil ohm readings (dimarzio would love to get that tho!)
I just think that the Duncan philosophy is to not care so much about ohms, you got the demon, and full shred that sonically cover a lot of area between the PAFs and the customs.
That's without the CS brobucker and the 78 which really cover most of what people need in the area between PAF output and custom output.

The custom wind is really much more versatile than 14K would seem like.

Duncan has the whole line covered sonically, IMO, the specs are an afterthought.

edit: the mismatched coil thing IS kinda part of the dimarzio sound and is patented I think. they get this weird midrange thing goin on.

Interesting. I did notice the Custom Shop has some in that range. Though I imagine they'd wind any non-infringing design wanted of course.

I'm thinking the '78 or a JB is for me. Just not sure which yet.

Fear with the JB is that it's too hot, and the '78 not hot enough, though I often wonder if the Seth would be fine, LOL!

Definitely have heard great tones out of all 3 though though. Naturally what you hook it too plays a role too. Guess I'm aiming for similar to what I had with an old Gibson V with factory p'ups tone wise, but JB sustain-wise.

I know that may seem contradictory, but the idea is to be able to switch from rhythm to lead without stomping on anything. The V was just a little short in the sustain department, otherwise I was happy with it.

That'd have been about a '73, so PAF type with A5, as best guess... so '78 seems like a fit, but a quick try of a Jackson Dinky with JB showed me the JB has awesome sustain... just not sure what to think about it's tone when turned down a bit, say for crunch or even further for finger picking.

I dunno though I've always found it easier to get the gain from the amp and choose a PAFish pickup, that way you can clean things up a lot, and very easily. Rolling the vol. down to 8 is usually enough for me. I don't need a ton of sustain but if you do I really can't imagine the '78 falling too short there.

The C5 cleans up OK but it's not the best for that. Could be something you may like if the JB is just too hot.
