SD SH-14 and STB-14 what is the difference?

Hi folks,

I tried to figure it out at the SD page but couldn`t really find an answer. I want to replace the Bridge pup of an Epiphone Limited Custom SG. THX to Blueman i figured out what I`m looking for is a Custom 5 pup. The guitar has a maestro tremolo. The STB-14 is supposed to suit a floyed rose? Why is that? What is the difference to the trembucker version? Could anyone please explain it to me?

THX in advance.

Hi I´m not familiar with the pickups you mentioned but sounds like it´s just the difference between the normal model and trembucker model from what you´ve written.

The string spacing at the bridge is a bit wider on a trem bridge than on a fixed bridge so the trembuckers are humbuckers with wider pole piece spacing so that they line up with the strings on a guitar fitted with a trem. If the string spacing is 2" or over from e to e (measured above the bridge pickup I guess) they recommend using the trembucker model.

If you´ve got an SG you probably want the non trembucker model (Unless it´s been modified for a trem).

THX for your answer. Well that is what you could think. I already tried a SD SH-5. The pole pieces didn`t fit properly under the g b and e string. So a little bit wider spacing seems to be what I need. Can anyone confirm that? It is a meastro tremolo.

Its not going to line up perfectly. but a trembucker is going to be out of wack as well. Possibly more so.

+1. I ordered an SH-14 for my Epi SG, but received a TB-14 instead. Not only did it not line up (both 'E' poles were outside of the strings), but the bobbins are also significantly wider than standard spacing, to the point that the TB didn't fit in the pickup ring without shaving it some.

THX for the answers. Well Ijust ordered a SDT-14- If it doesn`t fit I will return it. I post the result here in case some else like to know the answer. So I can compare and see which one fits better.

OK the custom 5 trembucker arrived. You have to be aware that my custom limited Epi SG has a meastro tremolo. I compared the spacing of the original epi pup and the STB-14. The spacing is just a little tiny bit wider. Just by looking at it it seems to be the same. But after replacing the pup you could tell the spacing is just a bit wider. But it is abetter solution than the regualr version.

Trembucker leaves off the low e string and the a string (a string for just a tiny bit). Regular version leaves off the g b and e string. Trembucker fits better in my eyes. If someone wants the perfect solution you might habe to choose a gibson pup like the 57 classic plus.

Sound of the custom 5 is really cool. Big fat and warm with more power than a regualr 59. Compared to the fact it is a moded custom it has less distortion than I expected it to be. The description a 59 on steriods is pretty close to what you get. I wouldn`t recommend it for metal with a SG but for classic rock and hardrock with a vintage vibe it is perfect.
