SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

I have a gibson dirty fingers in the bridge of my les paul and love the sound of it. I also have a set of ceramics in an epi les paul (500T/496R). I was wondering what the SD equivalent of these two pickups would be?

Also, as much as I like it, I'm looking for a pickup that has a bit more low end and less ice pick treble (for some punk palm muting). What SD pickup would meet this?

I seem to have a preference for a ceramic in the bridge. I play punk/ska along with hard rock, metal, and some blues. I play mainly through Marshalls and a Mesa Mark IV.

Also, what exactly is the difference between the 500T and the Dirty Fingers, they sound quite similar with the dirty fingers maybe having a little more raw edge?

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

im not sure what the difference is, but i have an invader and a 500t.
they both get a wildly distorted sound.

good for metal

i think dirty finger is the loudest gibson pickup.

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

Im not sure any pickup maker has anything close to the DF. I have one in my LP and it is its own beast. It is more of a combination of a few SD pickups. It has the aggression of the Distortion, the chunky bottom end of the Custom and the power of the Invader.

It works great for nu metal, but with the right amp, it does a great 80's hair metal sound. And the DF is what a lot of guys played on back then too (John Sykes, Steve Clark....).

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

I've got an old 80s Dirty Fingers (Pat # on baseplate), and it meters at 15.9K. I've also got a more recent Gibson (can't recall the model - Gibson USA logo on baseplate, looks like DF, can't recall if it's a 500T or if that went with the LPS when I sold it - has a "T" on the bottom under the screw coil) and it meters at 15K.

While the Duncan Distortion should be the same output, it won't be the same voice.

ur is prolly a 500t because I have one of the new DF's and it says on the box its a "reissue" of the original DF. Mine reads 17.1k, has 3 ceramic magnets and a blank baseplate. The 500t's have the Gibson "USA" logo and a "T" on the baseplate. I called Gibson and they said these new DF models are reissues of the original models thats came out in the late 70's/early 80's.

The dirty fingers are very similar to the 500t's, just with a slightly hotter wind and a more agressive sound.

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

I think by your description. the invader is what you are looking for. I posted a quick clip in the clips section, with an invader in an SG through a couple old Marshalls... should give you an idea...

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

I think you guys might be right. I thought that the invader would be too much (it's an extremely aggressive looking pickup). I tried a SH-6 in the bridge, and although it does have a very nice sound to it and great boomy low end, it just isn't as raw/punk as the dirty fingers (maybe lacks the mids?).

I have the dirty fingers in a $150 epi les paul studio (an old one when they were still set neck) and it makes that guitar sound fantastic! (I have a dimarzio breed in the neck). I bought an epi elitist LP which is now my main guitar, and need a similar sound.

Now the next question, how would I go about getting a custom invader in zebra (black/cream) to match my current setup?

Thanks for all the input guys!

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

The Dirty Fingers humbucker has two rows of screw polepieces rather than six screws and six slugs.

The 500T can be obtained with a metal cover whereas the DF always has open bobbins.

The original run of DF humbuckers predates DiMarzio making dual cream bobbins their registered trade mark. Hence, Gibson was able to offer the DF in black/black, black/cream and cream/cream configurations. The screw poles were normally gold plated. DF humbuckers fitted as original equipment were invariably black.

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

You can find a Black/Cream Invader on ebay... probley through a buy it now from a dealer on there. or you can get one here -- http://www.wymoreguitars.com/Invader-Bridge-Zebra_p_67.html you can use wymores dscount to get a couple dollars off too.

I think you will be very pleased with the Invader !

more than pleased. i have one in a fender bro, and its a metal machine.

its so easy to get harmonics to ring, even with low gain.

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

That is perfect! I've ordered from Wymore before, great company. They seem to have all kinds of stuff that no one else has too.

Re: SD version of Gibson Dirty Fingers?

Invader with regular PAF style pole pieces or DD with the side magnets (same thing).
