seagull acoustic guitars?

anyone have any experience with a seagull? they look pretty sweet, and the artist series really interests me, but how are the others? . im really digging that headstock (the one on the homepage), the 12th fret inlay, and they look pretty solid as well, except they are part laminate part solid wood. is that good or bad, ive heard both ways? i also saw one with a 3 piece back, pretty cool looking.. or any of the other acoustic guitar companies that are on godin's site? http://www.godinguitars.com (art & lutherie, simon & patrick, norman, LaPatrie. I am looking to possibly pick up a second acoustic, maybe something a bit cheaper than the martin to bring to college. Or maybe something nicer, and bring the martin to college. regardless, how do they sound, quality (id assume great, since they have some sort of connection with godin) and what was ur experience with them? also cost, and if anyone knows where i could try one out or get one in the nyc/tristate regoin.

thanks a ton.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

they are GREAT guitars. I can't say enough good things about them, and I can't say anything bad.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

300-600 is a good range, find one you like. I can't remember what model I had, but they are simply top notch instruments. It's Martin/Taylor tone without the price tag. Takamine also makes a few models that sound freakin' amazing too. The Seagulls are something special though.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

If you asked me what I think is the best value for the dollar in an acoustic guitar, I would tell you Seagull. Unbelievable quality for the money, IMO.

Are they the best acoustics ever made? No. Are they an incredible value in playability and tone? Yes.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

Don't listen to this HamerPlyr guy, he has no idea what he's talking about, shheeesh! :)

No really, he hit it right on. Great value. NOT a martin or taylor, but hell they sound good.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

Ahhh, the kind of guitar that I love. It looks like shiite, but it plays and sounds great!

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

i dont really care about looks, i mean, i bought a martin d-15. for that money, u can get a nice purty acoustic that sounds nowwhere close. i love my martin to death, but for a second acoustic id kinda like something sounding a bit different, granted a d-15 isnt "true" martin tone, its darn close. id like something that would sound great with the martin, so i could be chillin with friends, grab the martin and a second guitar, and have them sound different, but work well together. As for looks, and abuse and temp changes, im gonna be going to college in maine, but it wont be outisde, i take good care of my gutiars, they sleep in their cases. im not to worried about that. johnjohn, how much for all those mods you talked about? and why?

do they all have laminate sides, or just some? i really like all solid wood guitars, but if they are 3-600, i gues i can deal.

I have an Artist CW and I agree with HamerPly, they ARE very good, but not great like a nice Martin or Taylor. Although I have had some Martin and Taylor players tell me they love my Seagull. ( I think its the grass is greener syndrome )

They do need a little tweaking to have the best playability.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

Everytime I sit down with one I'm impressed. Got some down time with one about 3 months ago and I couldn't believe how well it played, not to mention it had one of the lowest actions I had ever seen on an acoustic

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

I have one and like it. But, I'm weird.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

I sat in Saeid music in North Little Rock (NLR) and played a D15, D28, EC000 and an exotic, and D45, as well as various seagulls. With the seagulls sounded as good as or better than every martin EXCEPT the D28 which has THE GRAIL Martin tone, just like a hummingbird has THE GRAIL in Gibson tone to me.

The woods were great and the playability was nice, I can see where JohnJohn is coming from with a few subtle upgrades they would be fantastic guitars...maybe like being feitenized? John what's your take on this? Do you deal in Seagulls? If anyone knows could they tell me what would one cost that was built like a hummingbird but feitenized and a new bridge?

The best sounding accoustic I ever heard was a sixties hummingbird. One of the previous owners had carried it into a warm building after it sitting in a cold car and opened the case, in front of the guys eyes (the owner who owned it when I played it) the finish cracked all over. The guy said let me take this home and I'll meet you again tomorrow. That night he sanded it down and put a coat of laquer on it. It was plain wood colored. He took it to the future owner and when he (the future owner) played it he bought it. Accidents can be good I guess.

They are great guitars! I had an S6+ Cedar top that was wonderful, but I traded it off for more gear. It was one of those that shouldn't have gotten away.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

i don't play acoustic much, but i played my buddies Seagull and it played really nice, i found the tone (or whatever the word is you use for acoustics) very smooth and clear.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

+1 for the seagulls, good choice.

For something different check out the Larivee Parlor, small, all wood, very portable, amazing sound for its size, great acoustic blues guitars and I think they are in the same price range.

Good luck on your choice.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

I wish I had one... I think the magic ingredient is the Cherry wood that they use in my favorite models, which seems to resonate extremely well, looks great, and sits in the tonal spectrum right between Mohog and Maple. Plus they don't use a buttload of finish on there, and I firmly believe that helps the resonance a lot.

I LOVE those guitars. I prefer them over all others.

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

I'm with timccart on this - nice guitars, great value for money. I had mine setup again recently and its got a great, smooth (yet loud) tone. Still, I played a Big Baby Taylor the other day and was just blown away by the sound. Green grass :)

Re: seagull acoustic guitars?

GREAT guitars, anything nearly related to the godin name is usely amazing.
thinking of buying one myself.

p.s check out the godin acoustics, but there are pretty exspensive :smack:

I've used the M6 (satin top not gloss top) that I've used for the last 18mths EVERY friday night for gigs.... It sounds and plays great...

I did however have to get a bit of work 12mths in as the bracing had come loose in 2 places... While getting that done, also had the nut and saddly replaced with grapthech, fret dress and general setup... since then it's really played like another guitar...

I play pretty hard on this guitar and have taken some gouges out around the soundhole (cedar top - it's just like butter). just something to be careful with, but that's just cedar tops...

I would highly recommend this guitar...
