Searching for balanced, jack of all trades 1x12 speaker

I built a 1x12 for myself recently to downsize for a new apartment. Chose the dimensions of the Tone King Royalist at about 24x17x11" with a slight slant.

Tried G12T-75 in it since I had one laying around. It sounded very "big" but also way too fizzy and modern.

Tried a Greenback. Love them in 4x12s but found that in a 1x12 my bass was sounding like a broken kazoo.

Those two speakers are about opposites so I had a feeling I'd prefer something in the middle.

Vintage plexi-ish crunch tones.

I hate V30s with a passion if that helps to narrow. Harsh treble is a pet peeve.

Watcha got? amp is only 15 watts, el84s so power handling shouldn't be a big deal. Open to all brands.

H30.

Alnico Gold/Blue

That new 35 watt anniversary speaker may be perfect according to Celestion.

i like the h30's a lot

Thank you. This H30?

I was abit scared away by that comparison. The reissue sounds so bright and my amp is already quite bright. I will have to try one in person.

The Eminence Private Jack, Tonker have me somewhat interested as both are described as having more extended bass than a greenback but with similar smooth treble

Lynchback?
If the cone grieves you, use some thicker grill cloth, filters out those tones....
Anyways if you want to record alot, it actually needs to be somewhat ugly to sound good in a mix :)
People often forget that in their single minded search for too smooth tones!

Re: Searching for balanced, jack of all trades 1x12 speaker

the H30 suggestion is a good one.

also, if you can find a used mesa black shadow C90, I like those a lot, as well. Very balanced, sounds great with all sorts of rigs. sounds great in open, semi open, or closed back designs.

+10 for the Swamp Thang. My #1 choice for great all-around spkr.

I also like the H30.

Hi, I would heartily recommend either celestion g12-65 or emi private jack, the latter being more balanced of the two imo.

Re: Searching for balanced, jack of all trades 1x12 speaker

I'd try a modern Greenback-based speaker, like the Eminence Legend 128 or Celestion Lynchback. In general, they have a lot of the good tonal character of a Greenback, while reducing the classic Greenback's drawbacks (some of which you've already described). The Legend is pretty affordable. I like it a lot in my 15W Ampeg combo.

H30 or a G12K100 (does have an extended high end, but isn't harsh or fizzy like a 75, and is more balanced overall).

If you are not limited by the 50 watt rating, don't neglect the Cannibis Rex.

Re: Searching for balanced, jack of all trades 1x12 speaker

If you do like Greenbacks, there are a few alternatives with more headroom that I'm sure can handle low-end better in a 1x12. Lynchback, G12-65's, or Creamback M's might be worth a try, and the first two might be a good middle ground betweeen Greenback M's and G12T-75's.

That being said, though, Greenbacks M's, Creamback M's, T-75's, H30's, EVH's, and pretty much every other Celestion I've tried has had more going on in the treble department compared to standard MIC Vintage 30's. Less harsh? Maybe, but most of them seem more airy up top.
