Searching for my 1st Bass Guitar.... Ibanez TMB300, P-Bass, Jazz Bass, etc.

Hi there!
Anyone knows any information about the Ibanez TMB300 bass?

I know they're active, come in different colors, and have Jazz pickup on the bridge and P on the neck.

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/u_...&cat_id=2&series_id=58&data_id=123&color=CL01

There are no videos or sound clips yet, but...
For a guitarist searching for his bass guitar, would you recommend it?

I have also considered a P-Bass or Jazz Bass. Would like to know what are their main sound differences. Which would be a versatile one, all around, etc.
Help will be appreciated!

Best guess, Crafted In Indonesia - just like the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass. ;)

The switchable dual coil pickup should be a bonus. P, J and pseudo-Stingray sounds all in one instrument. Budget active electronics may disappoint.

Hello FunkFingers! Thank you for replying! For what you say, the bass could be a good investment, but the pickups may suck. Do you think they could be replaced easily? I saw you mentioned the Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass. I want to make a good budget friendly first bass acquisition.

All help, suggestions, and recommendations are appreciated!

Re: Searching for my 1st Bass Guitar.... Ibanez TMB300, P-Bass, Jazz Bass, etc.

My first two basses were passive P-basses. The first one was a Squier II. Then I upgraded to a MIM P-bass that had the P+J pickup configuration. These were great basses to start out with and the one with the P+J pickups was versatile indeed.

My favorite basses I've owned so far are my current passive Warmoth Jazz bass and my active Music Man SUB Stingray. Depending on the kind of music you play a Jazz bass may be plenty for you. They are pretty versatile but not nearly as versatile as an active bass. So, that Ibanez may be a good selection for you but you may want to replace the active electronics and maybe even the pickups. If you know how to solder, no sweat. If you do not know how to solder it may be a bit more complicated but not impossible.

+1. A Jazz bass is my recommendation, one of the MIM Fender Std's or a Squire VM's. Having two PU's gives versatility. Besides singles coils, you can get MIM Fender Jazzes with two spilt coils (Black Top) and two HB's (Modern Player).

Yeah, knowing what kind of music you're likely to play may make a difference to what we suggest (though the flexibility of that Ibanez will work in your favor).

I may need my guitar tech for the job. Would like to learn how to solder in the future*

I do like Fender style bass, and Squier Vintage Modified were ones I was researching like the Vintage Modified Jazz V Bass. Someone in the MF's staff suggested me a Eva Gardner Signature bass. It had the P-Sound, but the Jazz neck I felt in love with. My friend has an American Jazz Standard, and the neck feels like heaven. I still haven't been able to plugged in, but the neck felt great!
A person that played bass with me, gave me his Rogue bass for a few days. Those pickups did lack tone, and I didn't like much the neck feel. I still could manage to record a decent bass lines using the BIAS iOS Software; but it ain't the bass for me.

As for the genres I play, I really vary. I do like pop punk, latin rock, pop music, alternative, classic rock, rock n' roll, some hard rock, reggae, blues, etc. I may play some metal kidding around like Metallica, but that's just messing around with the instrument. I do play in standard tuning. I would like to own one to start learning some bass chops, music creating/recording, and maybe (just maybe) really play live with it. I'm actually a solo singer, but do play the guitar (lead or rhythm) in a friend's band. He's now bassist absent, so maybe I'll need to fit in the position a la Brian Ray.

The stock pickups may well prove to be nothing special. It was the active treble/bass tone circuitry that suspect will suck.

The Cort factory in Indonesia manufactures instruments for numerous well-known global brands. Look beyond the cosmetics and you should spot similarities between Cort, Ibanez, Schecter and Squier instruments in the sub-$500 price bracket.

On the pre-owned market, especially, some of these closely related products command higher prices than others. It is possible to land yourself a bargain.

Other options that you have omited to mention: the Sterling S.U.B. Ray4 and the FleaBass. The latter scrubs up pretty well with a pickup and EQ upgrade.

Just checked out the Fleabass and the Sterling. The Fleabass sounded very good for jazz bass playing. Sadly I can’t find it anywhere. Not even on eBay* Sterling seems like a good bass for the price, but it’s not the tone I’m really looking for. I didn't like the Cort's sound, but I do understand what you say. Many similar specs between them.

You suggest to wait out a little bit for one to appear on the used market, right? I see a black Yamaha RBX170 for $100. A 6th string Ibanez bass for $300
Fender Deluxe P-Bass for an unknown price, and a Fender Jazz Bass for $800.

Didn't Marcus Miller just team up with a company to make a sweet as hell jazz bass that's only like $400?
I remember it had 5 knobs, some were stacked and there was a little toggle. It's not the Fender sig.

Yeah this thing! I might even pick one up if I get the chance to try one. They look awesome, and those controls seem crazy useful.

Here are the specs! http://marcusmillerbysire.com/marcusmiller/page/marcus_spec.html
Is good to read the CEO's words about his work and collaboration with Marcus Miller. http://marcusmillerbysire.com/marcusmiller/page/about.html

Just found out the Ibanez TBM300 has the same pickups as the Ibanez GSR200 bass.

Pulled the trigger on the Ibanez TMB300 (Soda Blue) Bass.
It sounds amazing. I'm still getting used to it and learning to play songs on the bass; but I have no bad things to say about it. The P Bass side sounds good, and the J too. I'm still trying to learn how to ''blend'' the sounds correctly, using and disengaging the tap coil.

I'm wondering if any of you may know a case that fits this bass. It has a 14'' lower bout, 12'' upper bout, 19'' body length, and 44'' total body length.
All help is appreciated, and feel free to ask me any questions about the bass. I'll post better photos if you want too! :)

Marcus Miller ... bass ... $400 ... not the Fender sig.

I am surprised that Squier failed to come up with something like that.

On the other hand, Squier VM Jazz bass, your choice of active electronics, job done.

Re: Searching for my 1st Bass Guitar.... Ibanez TMB300, P-Bass, Jazz Bass, etc.

I got into bass a little while back after years of playing guitar. I bought a P Bass and a Jazz Bass. I ended up liking the P Bass pickup a lot, and the Jazz Bass' neck better. I wound up with a Mexico-made Fender PJ Bass. They have the Jazz bridge pickup and a P Bass pickup all with a with a Jazz size neck. I don't like active circuits, so I avoided several otherwise good bass guitars because of that.

MIM Fender Jazzes with two spilt coils (Black Top) and two HB's (Modern Player).

You'd have to go used to find these.

I'd recommend a Jazz Bass as well. A used MIM should run you about the same as a Squier.

As I wrote above, I got a Ibanez TMB300. It has passive P/ Double J Pickups and an active circuit. It works pretty near. I'm still trying to figure out how to ''blend'' correctly. I imagine I have it leaning to the jazz side now.

The most important part now is learning how to play it. I managed to pull off some easy Green Day, and Blink 182 songs. I nailed down ''Billie Jean'' & ''Happy'' bass riffs, and some Paul McCartney (Solo / Beatles) tunes like ''Eight Days a Week'', ''Jet'', ''The Ballad of John & Yoko'', and ''Get Back''.

More than playing the songs, I really would like to learn how to play and understand the instrument. Any guidance you can provide me?

PS. Feel free to ask me my opinion/review of the TMB300 if interested*

Righto. I hereby request your opinion/review of the TMB300 bass guitar. I also hope to hear sound clips. ;)

Listen to recordings. Observe how bass guitar parts lock in rhythmically with drum/percussion parts. Observe how bass guitar parts fit in harmonically with melodic and chordal instrument parts. Listen to styles other than Rock. Most particularly, listen to danceable music. Bass is the element within ensemble music to which dancers wiggle their pelvic regions. If your bass line makes you want to dance, you have found a groove. Ride it for as long as humanly possible.
