Im looking for the quietness of an active system but i dont want it to be to bright. right now i have an 81 in the bridge of a black korina les paul and its wayyy too bright. i listened to the samples on the emg website and the 85 sounds even more so.

any suggestions ?

You could try out Livewires. The HM Live Wire is fairly dark, but super hot....

i think the 85 is pretty deep in the low end, more so than the 81. the 81, to me, has a good midrange. it's perfectly balanced for me, but the 85 was too much like the tone zone in my opinion. it has a lot of low end and scooped mids.

The most insane active pickps I have used are the shadow SH-680A's. They are real dark sounding pickups that are intense. They sound amazing with high gain, and the cleans are very good but it does have a tendency to overload the clean channel.

I highly recommend the other SHADOW active model, SH-EQ5. It has a built-in EQ, but I always leave it flat. It is the warmest and the most organic sounding active pickup that I heard. Previously I had EMG 89s (in humbucking mode they sound like 85s), and they were MUCH brighter, almost screechy for my taste.

You could have a look at Adder Plus too.

They claim to give the active advantages while being passive. The Persuader Lead Custom is the darkest I think. I've heard clips of it played through an Engl Screamer. Punchy and smooooooth.

glad to hear that! if you need any help with the installation and setup, just ask. Here are the links to the wiring diagram and sample settings that for some reason are no longer available from the new website:

The value of the pots that Shadow sells to use with their pickups is 10 KOhm, but I think with EMG's 25 KOhm controls they will also function well.
As I have said, I prefer the sound of SH-EQ5 with the EQ set to flat, I keep the vol pot and the Noise Reduction pot at roughly 1/3.
Also I adjust the pickup to be VERY close to the strings, just before it starts to buzz. Hope this information would be useful.

The 85 is definatley not brighter than an 81. More meat and more low end chunk. Lots of people think it's too dark, but I love the 85.
