I have an 84 Gibson Flying V with a factory installed Kahler trem. Besides that and the tuning keys, it’s all non factory electronics and pickups. I would like to sell it, but I’m not sure what to do about the pickups. My goal is to sell it, and I want to make it as “market friendly” as possible. I realize the trem may scare away some potential buyers, but I definitely need to replace the pickups. I don’t mind spending some money on nice pots and caps, so I guess my question is- should I go for EMGs, or high, mid or low output passives? I have a 500t/490r set, I also have a jb/Jazz set, Lace Nitro Hemis, 59 bridge, or a Distortion bridge- then I could put the Jazz in the neck. I also have a super distortion for the neck.
Like I said, I’m doing this so I can sell the guitar and market it to the most amount of people. I suppose I’ll make a poll. Thanks in advance for the feedback

Re: Selling my guitar

I don't think you will appreciably increase the price or the marketability of the guitar by doing electronics upgrades/changes before putting it up for sale. I could be wrong though.

Selling my guitar

I’m not a fan of active pickups, so for me when I see a guitar for sale and the seller has swapped in EMG’s, that makes me want it less. Because I know I’ll need to change pups On tip of whatever the guitars sells for.
That’s just me though, I know EMG’s are super popular.

But I think Darg1911 is right about increasing the value.
I’d just sell it as-is and see what you get for offers.

I’m not necessarily worried about value, but I know I personally don’t like getting a guitar with junk on it, and then having to upgrade or fix stuff, and I kinda like doing that.

Yeah, I know the actives are a turn off for some people. The guitar only has one pickup in it right now, and I’m taking that one out and keeping it. Unless I just sell it with no pickups...

Aftermarket pickups will sell for more separately. Putting them in won't add much value, though it may make it quicker seller. Many will probably switch them anyway unless they just happen to be what they're after.

I would just drop in cheapest decent pickups at hand. Or ones I don't find any use for in foreseeable future.

Re: Selling my guitar

Put whatever pickup you have in the other slot and sell as-is. It's really hard to predict what a buyer might want, especially somebody interested in a Flying V with a Kahler :)

Seriously though, if you HAVE to upgrade them, put an ad in the Trading Post for the cheapest pair of Duncans or EMGs you can find. They both have the name on them, so that may add some curb appeal.

Re: Selling my guitar

While you’re at it put that guitar in he trading post too!!
Or post some pics with you’re asking price here...I wanna see this guitar!!

Re: Selling my guitar

Air norton/ super distortion = my fav.

I don’t think it would make it too much more appealing to upgrade them though. A lot of people like doing their own thing

Re: Selling my guitar

Put the 500t/496r in it.

There is no guessing the preferences of after-market pickup geeks.

Gibson fanboys want Gibson.

Re: Selling my guitar

Flying V with kahler = Jim Martin from Faith No More if it’s black, just need a mirror pickguard

Re: Selling my guitar

Sell it with no pickups, that way you have spares and the buyer can put in whatever they want.
