Semi-covered pickup--functional or looks?

What I'm talking about here is nickel covers that do not cover the whole top of the pickup, such as Gibson P-94, GFS Dream 90/Surf 90's, etc. Do these offer much in the way of noise rejection, or are they primarily for aesthetics? I imagine they are somewhat similar in function to the foil-wrap that some of my HB's coil windings have. Do these pickups look bad w/o the half-cover?

im sure there might be a little shielding and it does protect the coil but i think its mostly for looks

Thanks. Do you know if they typically look nasty underneath? I have a Surf 90 on the way & I'm wanting to ditch the metal and just have it black. I've pulled several full covers off of humbuckers, & there's usually just extra wax to clean up, but I've never pulled the cover off any of these HB-sized single-coils w/partial cover and seen what the bobbin looks like.

Just try it and see for yourself! What's the worst that could happen? You'd have to solder it back on...

Take it easy, I'm just trying to plan. I don't have the thing yet, or I would've done it. There's usually someone in this forum that has done just about anything you can think of to a pickup.
