Seth Lover Magnet Swap

Seth Lovers in a Carvin CS6, which is very similar to an LP, sound quite nice. But the bridge p/u was just a little anemic, as I have read others comment. And I took the advise I read on this forum to remedy that, particularly from Kojack. Swapped the A2 for a UOA5 today and, although I have only had a few minutes to try it so far, the difference made is real and is positive. Like it a lot. Thanks.

How did It change the sound? I always thought Seths were the perfect vintage PAF PUP atleast from what ive heard.

A PU's sound changes with the wood and guitar design it's in, so no PU sounds perfect in every guitar. To get within a certain tone range, tweaking is required.

Just wait three or four days until the magnet fully permeates the components and the new magnetic field and structure stabilize.

THEN you can really pass judgement. Anyway, I think you'll like'em even more. ;)

+1 You need at least a week for the mojo to find, and then enter the pickup in electrical form.

Re: Seth Lover Magnet Swap

If the Seth was a little "anemic" and the UOA5 helped, you may even want to try an A8 to make it more robust.

Re: Seth Lover Magnet Swap

I prefer A5 bridge pickups so I can understand why you like this. You've probably ruined the resale value though! ;)

How would changing a mag 'ruin the resale value?' There's nothing taboo about opening up a HB; do you think it's soul escapes? If he wants to sell it later, he can put the original magnet back in.

Re: Seth Lover Magnet Swap

First, about how the sound changed in my guitar. It didn't really change the tone much, but the output is increased. Balance is better between the neck and bridge. The overall tone is a bit deeper sounding. Not darker, or brighter, more of a change in texture. I'm terrible at describing tone, but I like what I hear.
Wish I had some decent recording equipment. A before, after and later comparison would be nice. Unfortunately I have to rely on my less than pristine hearing. Not to mention memory. If it gets better with time, that will be great. I like better!
A8? Maybe someday I will try it, but for now I think I have this guitar where I want it.
On resale value, I don't think I'll be selling the Seth's. They are keepers. If you meant the guitar, Carvin's don't hold their value that well for some reason. I can't see why. I realize my experience with them is limited to the newer models. But the 2 I have kick Gibson's of equal value to the ground. I'll take that a little further by saying that one would have to pay twice as much for a Gibson of equal quality. The only gripe I have about them is the electronics. All the pickups they have to choose from are either ceramic or A5. I really like the adjustability with the 11 screws, but the only cover you can put on them covers up all of that adjustability. But even after all this griping I have to admit they do make SOME very nice sounding pickups. Again a matter of taste. back to the Seths.
I may try a UOA5 in the neck next, or an A4. But for now I'm pretty happy with the results. They work well for my style of playing with my low watt vintage style amps. I can only imagine what they would sound like in a big old juicy Marshall stack.
