Seth Lover?

Can anyone confirm this as a real Seth Lover?:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261031785242

I've never seen a sticker like it, and I've never seen one with an actual signature - as opposed to the two stamped signatures on the production versions I've seen.

I have an older set (pre-2002), but they look the same as the current production versions, but with the small stickers to indicate bridge or neck and the winder initials.

The one from that listing would be quite the find, if it was real.

My first thought was it was a fake. SD stamp under the sticker, sticker doesn't look like current ones, although it looks better than a simple print off, but that's hard to tell from a photo.

Can anyone comment on the validity of that pickup? Evan?

Re: Seth Lover?

That doesn't look at all like the Seth signature on mine.

Another mismatch is that this pickup obviously is originally taped, whereas most Seths should have been covered.

Re: Seth Lover?

Good call. I didn't think about the tape.

My first clue that it might be fake, was in reading the title for the listing. An 80's Seth Lover. My understanding was the Seths were produced in 1994 on, so to be earlier than that seems unlikely.

Any chance it's a pre-production pickup? Maybe not 80's, but pre-1994?

Not sure why it'd have the numbered sticker, though.

Re: Seth Lover?

The seller has an ebay store & sell guitar parts,I don't think they would be aware of it ,If it is fake
But it is from the 80's so they do change a little

Re: Seth Lover?

I also seems to have a embroiled baseplate.

The black material inside the shield of the wire also look fishy and not like the cloth SD is using. But that might be just the photo.

Doesn't matter, it's a reserve auction anyway.

How do you know it's from the 80's? There were no production Seth Lover pickups in the 80's. Unless wikipedia got it wrong, which happens:
Seymour W. Duncan, known industry-wide as a guitar pickup designer and manufacturer, considered Lover his "humbucker mentor." The two were associated for nearly 20 years. In 1994, Seymour and Seth Lover joined forces to release the Seth Lover Model pickup, an authentic re-creation of the "Patent Applied For" humbucker. After numerous full-page ads, NAMM show appearances, and magazine interviews, Seth became a minor celebrity at age 84.

Who's says they've changed? Do you have any photos of a Seth Lover that is different from the current production offerings, aside from the above ebay listing? I'm not saying there isn't any, I just don't think we can say "oh well, things change" without having something more to go on.

My thought on the basplate is that it might be stamped with the SD logo under the sticker.

Assuming someone just threw a sticker on it, I'd say it's most likely a 59. The tape was done like that on the 59's, still is, I think. Although, I have a Jazz neck that also has the tape this way (JNJ).

Baseplates used on Seths and Ants have NO logo stamped.

Seths have machines to apply both Seth and Seymour signatures with blue ink.

Ants have baseplates and magnets signed by Seymour himself.

OH .I don't know if it's from the 80's .just it's in the sellers description
"Seymour Duncan SH-55 Seth Lover Alnico 2 PAF Humbucker Up For Grabs. Vintage 80’s Model With Signature Label & Number 06071092 (This Is How I Found It). Reads 7.19k ohm, regular spacing, has about 12” of braided wire."

Re: Seth Lover?

Baseplates used on Seths and Ants have NO logo stamped.

That's why I was wondering if it was a pre-production pickup.

Just for future searches: the exception might be the trembucker-spaced Seths, which are a shop floor custom: forum question, for sale. They've got the trembucker baseplate, but I'm not certain what the bottom looks like. My guess would be they are missing the sticker and signatures and have the SD stamp.

Anyone have a Trem-spaced Seth?
