Seth Lovers are really nice!

Initially, I wasn't expecting much. I'm still used to playing heavier styles of music with higher-gain pickups, so this is a slight departure for me. I haven't gone through adjusting pole height or pickup height and just went to plug in a jam. Now, I don't have the best amp right now. I sold just about all of my amps to help my wife start a buisness, and only have a little Randall solid-state combo that I bypassed the internal speaker and plugged into my 4x12 Greenback cab.

Anyway.....they are definitely low-output. I needed to bump up the gain to get them to where I am used to with say...my JB, but there was this clarity to the entire midrange that was really nice. The highs and lows are definitely rounded and fairly soft, but when you wail the snots out of the strings, the bridge crunches up nice and can get a little raunchy, even for a little bit of chugga-chugga. It also takes very well to my SD1 for a little boosting. VERY dynamic pickup indeed. I'm not sure what the EQ range is on the Duncan site, but it seems very even to me. No offending spikes anywhere.

The neck has a very round character with really no offensive EQ spikes. Instead of crunching like the bridge, when you dig in hard, the neck seems to become more focused and "sting" on notes. It might be a little round for my tastes, but it's less boomy than the '59 that I have used. It's also LOUD. One of the loudest neck PUs I have tried.

I'm not sure if I will end up keeping these, but I'm really glad I got to try them. I'll rock them for a while and maybe try something else in the low-output range of Duncans. I really wish I had a nicer amp to try them out with. I'm still waiting on parts to fix my friend's JCA 50H, so I might get to try that out in a few weeks. Maybe then, I'll get a better idea of what they can do with some tubes in the signal path.

Overall, I would like something a little tighter, some more bite and raunch. I do like the warm and woody mids, though. I bet these would SMOKE with a Marshall and some G12H-30s.

From what I have heard from the Seths I like them better then the PGs which I love the PGn but I like the Seth better because of it's clarity. I wish the PGn had the clarity and high end of the Seth then it would be perfect but thats only a dream right now but i'm sure the CS could do it.

Re: Seth Lovers are really nice!

Clarity is definitely one of the Seth's strengths. I'm going to try some different height/pole adjustments to get more raunch out of them.

HI,
Everything everyone else said. Seth's are my favorite p'up. Love the Jazz 2 for the neck. I would not be true to myself if I did not toss in that I am maybe the only one I've heard say so, but with my bridge Seth, and with MJ's blessing and advice, put an A5 in place of the A2 it comes with, and I DON'T feel it gives it any nasty spikes at all. It just has that extra punch-just a little more, to match my real way way back PAF. I think after talking to MJ she said my explanation sounded like it needed the extra A5 to match my particular PAF. Hey, even w/out the A5, I would still be as big a Seth fan as I am now. When I could not afford another C. Shop zebra A5 Seth my question was "What do you have that comes close for a rarely played but still loved beater guitar?" I love I can buy my favorite pickup whenever I can afford it! Thanks, MJ and The whole Duncan Community!.

Wow, even over the Bonamassa clones and antiquities?!? That's quite an endorsement. Might just pick up a set since I have a liberator in my Heritage H150 :D

From all the clips I have heard, I liked the Seths more, too. I THINK the Antiquities have aged A2 magnets, where the Seths have full-strength A2s. The Ants. sounded a little sweeter, but the Seths have quite a bit more bite and snarl.

I'm installing a new PT in the amp on my operation table, so I'll get to hear what the Seths sound like with some tubes. ;) Can't wait.

Re: Seth Lovers are really nice!

Actually, I bought a set of Bonamassas, but I don't have a guitar to put them in so they sit in a box on top of my dresser waiting for the right LP to enter my life...

That sounds like a Demon to me. I have been thinking about picking up a set of Seths for one of my Les Pauls, I just haven't gotten there yet for some reason.

I tried the Demon and didn't like it. Some may call me crazy, but the Seths have more balls than the Demon.

Dude, call/pm me if you're ever in Seattle and want to hear em. I've got em in an H150 ;) They took me a LOT of height tweaking to get them perfect and they sound incredible.

Question: are they meant to be exact replicas or make modern guitars with less dry/aged woods sound like his older guitar?

The Bonamassas were meant to make Joe's test guitar sound the same as his best '59 Burst. The test guitar was a newer '59 reissue that had a lot of work done to it (new lacquer finish, Brazilian fingerboard, etc.).

My friend has a set of Bonamassas in a custom built guitar (not quite a thick as a LP, but close). They sound real nice. I have, and love both Seths and Ants. I have an early set of Ants in my LP that sound awesome. The Bonamassas and Ants are real close sounding (comparison-wise) to my ears.

Is that how the Slash set was designed as well?
