Seths vs Antiquities

Could someone please tell me what the differences are between the Seths and the Antiquities? I thought Ants were aged looking Seths, since Seths are the real replicas of the actual pups made by Seth Lover in the old days, they should already sound aged. I was having a discussion w/someone the other day, so I need some clarification. Your help will be appreciated.

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

Both are PAF replicas but Seths have full strength magnets where Ants are Dunaged and they use the same gauge wire but it is different wire and Duncan uses some "special techniques" to make the Ants sound older...

The Seths sound like the original PAF recipe should sound the day they were made.

They have fully-charged magnets, plus the set is "balanced" neck and bridge, not like the originals that were all over the place. In many ways is a "better" version of the original.

The Ant are Seymour's take on how a 57 year old aged p'up should sound.

HTH,

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

Thanks for clarifying my thinking. So we have the Seths which are better than what was originally invented by Seth Lover, we have Seymour's take on what they should look and sound like now w/Ants, we have the 59s that were supposed to be clones of the best sounding 59 PAFs, and the latest are the Joe Bonamassa 59s, which are even better than the best 59s. Have I got it pretty straight? I have a Seth neck, and I find it to be the best sounding neck pup I have used. Is there that much of a difference between it, and all the others? Did I blow the pooch by getting a Seth neck?

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

I have several sets of Seth's and one set of Ant's. I like Seth's much better. A2's have a rounded high end and are low output to begin with. Aged A2's have even less output and less treble. I have various makes and models of PAF's, and Seth's are my favorite.

Remember that all those great British tones from the late 1960's and early 1970's were with relatively new PAF's, not 40 or 50 year old ones.

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

Thanx Blue. It makes me feel better about my Seth neck. I got it based on the Lt. & your recommendation, and I was not disappointed. But I was confused as to the difference between all the pups that are essentially supposed to be the exact same. Also in the price difference between these pups. I can tell you, the Seth was not cheap, especially when I ordered it in all black bobbins w/o logo. I have it in My Kramer with 59/cust UOA5 magnet (also recommended by Blueman & GuitarDoc). This is a wonderful combination.

Don't listen to that marketing blah blah.

To my ears the Antiquities have an airy sound to them, some openness that you don't find outside some boutique pickups. The Seths have it, too, but less of it. To be honest I didn't see a reason to keep the Seths since they don't do anything that the Ants didn't do better to my ears.

Another difference is that in a typical Ant pair you have a bigger delta between neck and bridge (typical 7.5 and 8.5 Kohm) whereas Seths tend to be closer (both close to 8 Kohm). The Ant bridge has some extra bark to it.

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

i also prefer the antiquities, they just have a little extra something. i still love the seths too.

I'm just the opposite. I don't see that there's much need for Ant's if you have Seth's available. I couldn't get any cut or bite from the bridge Ant, even with 500K's. Just not enough going on. I ended up putting an UOA5 in it to get some treble. I'm well-known for my controversial preferences for warm PU's, but with aged A2's, the high-end is very rounded and smooth. I think Seth's have a more balanced EQ and more aggressive sound. More versatile PU.

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

Truth to my ears is that aged magnets or not, special wire, etc and on and on...Ants don't sound "old" to me at all...

That is based on playing quite a few vintage Gibsons, many of them with the original PAFs...

Re: Seths vs Antiquities

I've not layed out the cash yet for Antiquity humbuckers(Love the Surfers for Strat)...The Seths are wonderful pickups and I Love em just the way they are stock..
