Setup Questions?

Is there any advise one could give a rooky in the setup of SD pups as far as Distance from pup to strings, adjustment of screws in pup, etc. For both bridge and neck positions. This particular instance is for a Les Paul. Thanks in advance.

"What is the proper height for a pup?
A good starting point for the distance from the bridge pickup to the strings is 3/32 of an inch. The neck pickup can be set to provide a good output balance when compared to the bridge or to produce a particular tone when used together with the bridge. If a pickup is too close to the strings the tone tends to get muddy and lack clarity, and if placed too far away the tone will be thin and lacking in character. All pickups have a "sweet spot" where its tone will be optimal for a given guitar and pickup combination."

Thanks. I have read the notes but am looking for more advise (experience). I am not sure what adjusting the screws in the pup will do or if there is a rule of thumb on the adjustment?

All I do is "twist 'til it sounds good".

By the way, I am talking about the 6 screws on the pickup itself.
