Guys i was trying out that toothpick technique with my strap hole becasue it came loose after 4 months of not moving. AND as a result for some reason it wont work. Also That little cotton thing that goes between the button and the guitar ripped up. So i have nothing to go in between. Also the hole is very big and stripped now! When i put a toothpick in there it simply grinds the toothpick into DUST!!!!! See i first installed dunlops on then i switched to schallers and as a result i ended up using a much larger screw to hold it, as i didnt know about the toothpick technique. So now the hole is huge and unrepairable. Im hoping i can take it to a tech and get it fixed. I want to buy a new set of schallers that have the original small screw and have them install those in instead of those screwed up screws i have in there. Also will he have something to go in between the button and the guitar body? ...so any advice is HUGELY appreciated Im taking this guitar to the shop this week most liekly i cant stand not being bale to play my electric under these circumstances!

THANKS!!!!!!!!!

Jason

One more thing, did i mentiion the button is now made for larger screws, becasue i edned up making them bigger for new screws. So i have to buy a new set of locks.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

Use a bitchload of toothpicks, and fill it with glue.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

Just buy a new set of schallers...9 or 10 bucks no big deal.

I put brand new schallers in my brand new ibanez, and within a day or two they were comign loose. So at my setup my tech put in dowls (small poles of wood) into the hole and basically drilled brand new button holes for me..they are nice and tight now.

If your tech can't do that and insists on using toothpicks...time to find a better tech that knows how to work with wood.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

Wood glue and fine saw dust. Mix the two together so that it's like liquid wood. Stick it in there, make sure there isn't any air at the bottom or anything silly like that. It should be fairly thick. When it dries, liightly sand off the top to make it level with the guitar. You are now at square one.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

go and buy a dowel rod... cut up a piece and glue it in

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

I used dowel rods split down the middle and a little bit of wood glue when i had this problem. Let it dry overnight though, as you don't want to screw in the button and have the glue bond to it!

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

All of these will work. It's not real complicated, your filling a hole in wood with more wood so that the screw has something to latch onto. Just make sure that you allow the glue to fully dry, whichever method you chose to use.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

Something like this happened with my Hamer. The bottom strap button somehow stripped the screw hole, so I filled it with the strongest super glue I could find, and glued the screw in. No way hell that's coming loose. I don't necessarily recommend this because it's pretty much permanent, but I figured the odds of me needing to change strap buttons were slim to none.

I´d have to see it to say "for sure" that toothpicks won´t work anymore, but doweling the hole and redrilling definitely will ;)

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

longer screws?

I also had to slightly ream out the hole in some Schallers one time so I could pass a bigger screw through on my PRS. The guitar was too expensive to trust with "normal" screws. I went with some pretty long ones.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

I cannot believe that no-one has mentioned the other mod that will always work - throw the guitar away and fit on your schallers, why waste time filling the hole in with toothpicks and dowels. Start from scratch and then you'll know its perfect  :saeek:

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

What kind of guitar is it? If you don't love it, this is a perfect excuse to get a new one. Trade it in or ebay it. Btw, this thread is another example of why I resist buying guitars on Flea-bay. Who know what happened to it before you got it.

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

i just knock a golf tee into the hole and cut it off flush with the body with wire cutters. hasn't failed me yet...

Re: Severly Stripped Strap Hole...HELP PLEASE!

Thanks guys i added a dowl in there last ngiht myself with glue. ONe mroe thing, what do you guys use as to protect the body of the guitar form the buttom? That cheap litle peice of cotton fender gave me with the guitar ripped in half.
