Seymour d. SFX-01 PUP Booster.

I have installed the Fender Clapton Mid Boost in my Strat. I would rather not use that on board anymore. I'd appreciate anyone's experiences with the SFX-01. How does the pedal rate vs. the onboard boost. Thanks.

welcome to the forum!

i have both. the clapton system is actually two boosts. an always on preamp boost and the adjustable midboost. the sfx-01 is a pretty transparent clean boost. both are cool but do pretty different things.

the clapton gives a very fat boost, the sfx-01 gives a pretty flat toned boost. the resonance switches will subtly fatten the tone if the pedal is first after the guitar but its not the same type of thing as the mid boost.

IMHO, and we can certainly agree to disagree, Clapton's use of the active system marked the end of his good tone and the beginning of his awful tone. I've said it before...compare his lead tone on "It's In The Way That You Use It" from August (passive) to "Old Love" (the studio version from Journeyman) (active)...night and day. And "Old Love" has Robert Cray playing a solo on a traditional passive pickup Strat...and his tone just kills EC's...sweeter, more expressive, etc. As Jeremy said, the Duncan boost is just a clean boost, without the tone alteration, unless you plug your guitar directly into it and use the resonance switch, which is actually kind of cool. Bottom line, in my opinion, the SFX-01 is the much better way to go.

As always...friends don't let friends put batteries in their guitar.

Re: Seymour d. SFX-01 PUP Booster.

may I suggest you try a Fulltone Fat Boost 3. You can go from clean transparent boosts to sculpted boosts and beyond. Might give you the best of both worlds and a lot more options.

i have not tried the SD boost, but id like to second the fat boost recommendation. Its so awesome because of its eq and gain, so you can tailor it to match pretty well any guitar/amp combination.

ZIM pedal!

You can dial in your tone and type of overdrive or distortion you want.

I have the eric clapton boost on two different guitars and use them in different fashions, manly because of the pickups installed (One with SD SSL’s and the other with Fender C54). You need to know when to use the boost and with which pedals and amps.

That’s all folks!
