Seymour Duncan Convertible 100_flubby sound

I have a Seymour Duncan 80's Convertible 100 combo.

Its overdrive sound is quite flubby when the bass control goes higher than about 11 oclock. Ive tried many different combinations of modules and different tubes in in the modules.

I have tried other preamps through the FX loop of this amp and in the front end through the clean channel and bass response is much better. I dont think the problem is in the power amp.

Anybody familiar with these amps and recognise the issue Im describing?

Thanks.

Don't quote me, I know I work here but I'm just going on hearsay. The tone stack is in between gain stages. Boogie does this, and so do others. What happens is you turn the bass up to get more bass, but it affects the way the subsequent stages overdrive. On the Boogie MK series amps you can't really put the bass past 12 o'clock. But if you want more low end you do it with the graphic. So maybe a graphic EQ in the FX loop of the amp will give you the low end you want but without the flubbiness. Like I said that's what I do on the Boogies.

frankfalbo got it right. I have a convertible and just like frank said the flubby bass is because of the tone stack position, so I used an eq pedal in the loop to adjust the frequencies. The other thing you can do is a little mod which moves the tone stack and changes the tone of the amp to be more marshally as well, I haven't tried it myself but you can read about it here: http://www.diyguitarist.com/GuitarAmps/SD-Convertible/TShootSDC.htm

Well, Ive finally had this done. The mod to change the pos of the tone stack.

It sounds absolutely brilliant, I reckon this amp would have had a much better commercial life if they had been shipped stock like this.

No more flubby sound! Its now tight and defined and sounds tastier than -any- of my boogies -ever- did. And its still running the same valves it came with 20 years ago. Though this was looked after very well by its first owner.
