I had a design for a singlecoil in mind for almost 3 years now. I wanted to combine the tele sparkle, the power and girth of a p90, the chime of a strat plus quack if combined. I had the design but I didn't have the ability to really make the pickup. Until last january.
I went up to the factory and with MJ I spec'd it all out, dotted some I's, crossed some T's and low and behold.... my set was made. I was allowed to use a guitar they had laying around to test the pickups and yes... YES this was it. Just what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately, when I got back home (in the Netherlands) I didn't have a guitar ready.
Until this week.

This guitar was the perfect candidate. A superlightweight single piece white korina back, single piece korina top, single piece rosewood neck and a compound radius 22 fret, 24.75'' ebony board are the basic specs of this guitar. It had a great humbucker set but for some reason, this puppy begged for this single coil set.
I will make a clip, demoing the pickups. I'm really, really, really happy. The guitar plays like buttah and she's so light (less than 8 lbs, without chambering: all solid).
The neck pickup in tele mode sounds very warm but extremely clear and bell-like. A chime in the top end, akin to what I want in a tele pup. In p90 mode, it's fatter, broader and a bit more gritty.
The bridge pickup in tele mode sounds sparkly and twangy yet punchy with a decent amount of power. The p90 side is also surprisingly clear, slightly raunchy. Responds very well to the tone control. It's a great choice for everybody who needs a wide range of tones.
Oh and the middle position: it doesn't quack as much as I wanted, but that's because you need a middle singlecoil to get there, imho. Does it make me less happy? No. It means I need to get me a third pickup like this for the middle!
Oh, and no, it's either one or the other, not together in series or parallel. That's because of how we designed it. I won't tell you guys what's working underneath
Now with a demo!
