Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 TB-6 vs EMG 81-89

Greetings! I'm buying a new guitar, there are two models with same specs, but the only difference is in the pickups. Guitars are Jackson KVMG(Q) and KVQ Pro Series King V. KVMG(Q) has EMG 81-89 and KVQ SD Distortion SH-6 TB-6. Which pickups are better?7aa871569aab8256b2defee3b6e1b5c3 (1).jpg7aa871569aab8256b2defee3b6e1b5c3.jpg

I would personally go for the Duncans myself. It isn't that the 81-89 set is bad, it just isn't my cup of tea. It is all personal preference, but I like the feel of passives over active stuff... Either way, they will both be good for metal and hard rock!

They're both excellent. The direct mounting on the Duncan loaded one put me off though.

The direct mounting they use is really lame too... they put 2 cheesy coil springs under the pickups. Make me think of the ones at the bottom of a D cell flash light. So the pickup floats on those and isnt really coupled to the body like its suppose to be in a direct mount. Sadly its just a way to not spend the 50 cents on a pair of pickup rings.

To be fair, at least they're adjustable on that spring. I'd go for the SH-6 also. They're great pickups for metal.

Not really... If you move them more than a couple turns they start to flub up... a couple turns down and the pole screws start to hit and it tilts... if you bring them up they wobble cause nothing holds them in place. Its a cheesy way of mounting any way you cut it.

Oh well that sucks. Rip them out and use foam then.

Oh really? All it takes to mount a pickup ring is drilling 4 small holes. Not an impossible job by any means.

Regarding the core topic, either pickups are fine IMHO but I'd rather not support Cort.

I never tried the Distortion. I like EMGs a lot but I avoid them because of the battery. If you get either and decide you don't like them, I highly recommend trying the Nazgul. It's a beast. Very tight and articulate, but not harsh on the high end, and not thin on the low end. It's a bruuutal pickup. And no battery required.

Getting the pickup further away from the strings will require some additional routing. You can also forget about mounting something with a thicker magnet like a Super Distortion without getting a deeper pickup cavity routed.
If however, you like the sound, the magnetic pull isn't affecting string vibration audibly and you don't plan on tweaking and trying different pickups (in which case you might be at the wrong forum :)), then direct mounting can be nice of course.

Better yet, mount them in some Triple Shots.

Thank you all for replaying, but if someone have both, the 81 and SH-6, can you make a video of these two pickups and post link in this thread, I need to hear sound, advantages and disadvantages of both and why you choose one over the other.

Re: Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 TB-6 vs EMG 81-89

There are tons of demo videos on youtube already of these 2 pickups. What you really need to do is demo the pickusp yourself cause between the terrible audio quality of youtube and a persons personal bias the only way you will really know which is better for you is to try them out for yourself.

Yeah you are apsolutely right about that, but in my country is hard to find SH-6.

Re: Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 TB-6 vs EMG 81-89

I have demos of both pickups on my youtube channel. Link in my signature.

Same riff, same rig, same settings. Different guitar used for the EMG 81 and the SH-6 though, but should still give you an idea.

Allow me to make a caveat here.

As someone who uploads HD gear videos to YouTube, while it is true numerous gear vids have awful sound, I can assure you it is not because of YouTube or their website. It is instead up to the video creator to generate hi quality audio first, then package it correctly in their video. YouTube handles uncompressed audio just fine.

Re: Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 TB-6 vs EMG 81-89

Both are great combinations for metal. I use, and love both.

The emgs are sterile and have less feedback, the Duncan's breathe more and can be much more versatile.

I would blame youtube for your terrible audio quality instead of blaming it on yourself or your recording set up... but whatever floats your boat. The rate for audio now is 126kbs and is decent quality but nothing to write home to mom about. Older videos particularly low resolution videos can have all the way down to 64kbps.
