Are the nickel and gold covers any different? do they sound the same? can they come with 4 conductor hook ups?

AFAIK they're the same. the only difference would be colour. And 4 conductor hook ups are not dependent on covers. They're dependent on pickup, but almost all Duncans ca be obtained with 4 conductors, regardless of the cover or bobbins colour.
