Seymour Duncan Phat Cat

i'm thinking about getting the bridge position phat cat for my Pacifica 312II

i read somewhere that these p90 style pickups have growl and bite to them
and should give a good AC/DC sound like Malcolm Young

Re: Seymour Duncan Phat Cat

Do it. The bridge version is the one. The neck version is cool but the bridge version is cooler still and has the growl. Reminds me of an alnico 2 humbucker. I like it better than any P-90 I've owned. I know it's a P-90 under a nickel cover... but it has alot more growl and snarl than a P-90. At least it does in the bridge of my Strat.

Re: Seymour Duncan Phat Cat

i have recently discovered GFS pickups and since the GFS Liverpool is modeled after the Filtron pickup in Malcolm Young's guitar this should be good for AC/DC right

Re: Seymour Duncan Phat Cat

I like a Phat Cat best in the neck, paired with a HB. It's a little bright in the bridge in my guitars. But in the bridge slot of a HSS guitar, it should give a nice contrast.

i run a phat cat in the bridge of a lp special and i love it!! screams rock and roll to me

Re: Seymour Duncan Phat Cat

I run three PhatCats in my 57 Les Paul reissue! They are one of my favorite pickups.

I tried various configs with PhatCats and HB's (HSS, SHS, HSH, and HHH) and settled on PhatCats in all positions. It is my main guitar now.

I have no experience with GFS...

Re: Seymour Duncan Phat Cat

I had a phat cat in the bridge of one of my guitars and I loved it, except when it came time to record. The bit of noise that it comes with didn't matter to me live, but I couldn't ignore it in recordings.

My les paul with PhatCats is less noisy than my stat and tele, but I don't find any of them so noisy I could not record with them.

Right on!

Mine measured 8.90K before I modded it by adding more wire. Now I also have a tapped mode increasing the overall resistance to almost 11.00K (but I guess I wound the additional wire quite tight, thus increasing the resistance values, and I am also not sure whether the wire I have used is a regular #42 or #42.5 :) ). Closing it up was a nightmare though.

Anyways, it sounds great.

Here is a previous thread about my opinion about this sucker:

I don't know about the GFS Liverpools, but if he's more interested in the Phat Cat/P90 sound, I can recommend the GFS Dream 90s (or the Artec P90s you can find on ebay for $20--same exact pickup made by the same people). The Dream 90s and Mean 90s GFS sells are very similar to the Phat Cats, but made in Korea and sold for about half the price. I have 2 in a modded Tele and I love the range of sounds. They do AC/DC rhythm just fine, along with nearly anything else recorded before 1978 or so. I hear the Phat Cats have a little more grit and mids to them, which sounds like just what you're looking for.

In general, GFS pickups seem to be hit or miss based on what I've seen and heard. My Dream 90s are cool, but I just installed a set of Vintage 59s in an Epi G400. $69 after shipping and they're not much better than the stock POS. Love that Korean engineering... Wish I'd bought Duncan 59s now.
