Seymour Duncan pickup for 2017 SG Special

Re: Seymour Duncan pickup for 2017 SG Special

Well then, you seek the Gibson Tony Iommi pickup.

Didn't think it would be that easy, did you? Sorry we didn't stay Duncan. But we are kind of honest like that...

Welcome to the forum!

There actually was a Duncan Iommi pickup!
There is information you might find useful here and here.

Re: Seymour Duncan pickup for 2017 SG Special

what era black sabbath tones?

Re: Seymour Duncan pickup for 2017 SG Special

His tone did change a lot over the years. You'd never guess 90s, 80s and 70s Iommi is the same player. He went from stock pickups to P90s. to very high output mini humbuckers, to really high output regular-sized humbuckers.

I was about to ask the exact same question.

I have a Duncan A2P set in my SG. Love it, but i never tried to aim for a pure Black Sabbath tone.
If i had to be go for an early Sabbath tone, i would look into these : SD Phat Cat / Bare Knuckle Manhattan or Blue Note / The Creamery Hum-90 or Sonic-Six / Gibson P94.

Assuming your SG has a Humbucker cavity.

Re: Seymour Duncan pickup for 2017 SG Special

He has been using so much gain over the past 15 years or so. His tone is super compressed, and he plays so lightly...but it sound massive.

Indeed . . .

. . . just compare their 1st album (1970) to Dehumanizer (1992).

Totally two VERY diff gain structures / tones.

I think the duncan sh6 distortion is a good candidate. if you get a 4 conductor version, you can experiment with out of phase or coil split. You can probably snag a used one at a decent price.
