Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

I ordered a set of 6x 5-40 UNC hex pole screws for my brand new APH1-n A2 pro but they were way too loose & rattle within the bobbin threads......

Any idea what size screws I need?? I honestly thought 5-40 UNC was the correct size.... I'm confused.

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

Where are you located?

Dumb question, but you're just trying to replace the regular slotted screws with the hex poles, correct?

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

Yes. Just swapping the slotted screws out.
I'm in the UK.
I ordered a set of 5-40 hex poles (to fit SD, Dimarzio*, etc.) but they were definitely loose.

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

Masta’ c hooked me up with a couple sets of 5/8 inch long hexes which is the ideal middle ground for me. They fit perfectly in my SD pickups with no looseness whatsoever.

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

I played the charvel dnky24 which has an a2pro in the neck with a double row of hexes and it gave it a nice pick attack with a warm tone that’s not overly thick. Adding hexes to it is definitely the way to go. Warm and glassy seem opposite each other but it actually works out very well.

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

I have to ask, but are you sure you received the correct size?

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

They a look a little bit thinner than the stock pickup screws.... But otherwise I have no way of telling... I'll send them back and see what they say.

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

addictionfx on ebay has the correct size pole piece screws and in different alloys (1018, 1020, 1022, etc., I think they even have 1010). The different alloys will change the tone of the pup...1010=warm, 1022=bright.

That's interesting. Let's say I wanted to change out the fillisters in my JB with black Allen head pieces to look more like a full shred.(or even black fillisters.) What alloy would I want if I did not want the tone to change at all?

As will the length

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

Actually the addictionfx ones are said to not fit the thread properly. I found out and cancelled an order with them sometime ago. You might want to email them to confirm for yourself.

Well that's interesting. I ordered lots of them in different alloys a couple months ago and they fit perfectly.

Re: Seymour Duncan pole piece screws

I remember now. They said that specifically their hexes didn’t fit because the heads are too large. Some people were cracking their bobbins a little screwing them in all the way.

”The hex screw head is slightly larger than standard pole screws. Pickup builders might need to tap the bobbin holes a little bit for a good fit.” That’s on their eBay site but I can’t find the notice on their regular website anymore.
