Seymour Duncan Single Coil Pickup Combination

Suggestions needed:
Option 1. If I use Seymour Duncan Hot Strat in the bridge, which SD single coil pickups will be best for the neck and middle pickups ?

Option 2. If I use SSL 5 in the bridge, which SD pickups will match for the neck and middle positions.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Seymour Duncan Single Coil Pickup Combination

I use a Duncan Tele Hot as the bridge pickup in my favorite Strat. I've had both SSL-1's and Antiquity Surfers as the neck and middle pickups in that guitar. The Tele Hot matches perfectly with either.

I prefer vintage style neck and middle pickups but I've always liked a hotter than vintage bridge pickup.

So do players like Eric Johnson.

I have to answer a question with a question...what kind of sound are you after with the neck and middle? What is more important, volume balance, or traditional Strat tone?

Vintage or modern, anything will do as long as the guitar sound stratty.

I wish to put either Hot Strat or SSL 5 in the bridge for hotter output for the bridge pup, but confused with which pups to install both in the neck and middle.

Thanks again

You have got a lot of options. If you prefer a warmer strat tone for neck and middle you can look at the aps-2. The ssl-52 is a great balance of bright and warmth and work great in the neck and middle. I currently mix these two in my strat. I have the aps-2 in the neck and bridge and the 52 in the middle for the bright and warm mix. You probably wouldn't like the aps-2 in the bridge as it is not very hot at all. I believe both would match well with the ssl-5 or other hot strat pickups.

A lot of pickups will sound Stratty...SSL-2, Five Two, Antiquity II Surfer, Texas Hots. Is hum-cancelling important? If so, look at the STK-S4.

SSL-1s or SSL-2s go nicely with the SSL-5 or SSL-6 in the bridge.

Re: Seymour Duncan Single Coil Pickup Combination

the ssl5 still sounds a little stratty to me but with more output, bottom end, and mids. the top end is darker but still prominent. the ssl3 is a little higher in output but has much bigger mids. both are great pups, the ssl5 might be more versatile.

ssl1 neck and middle with ssl5 bridge is a great, proven setup but there are plenty of other options if you want specific things. like some people dont use the middle pup by itself, some people dont like the notch tones, some people solo on the neck pup, use the middle for clean parts and the bridge for distorted rhythm
