hi guys
i have a strat with three single coils, the bridge pup is a SSL-5 i do like the sound/tone of the SSL-5 very much, if i wanted to swap the SSL-5 for another single coil sized pickup, what would you guys use, i am looking for MORE of that SSL-5 tone, maybe more fatter/beefy sound, if the pickup is a single coil size, i will be open to all your suggestions,
my first strat will keep the SSL-5 pup, my second strat will be using one of your suggestions in the bridge position, i have made my own choice about the neck and middle pups, when i make the change it will be interesting to hear both strats compared, this is how i learn and hoping you guys can help,

thanks again for your time,
bluesfloyd,

Re: seymour duncan SSL-5

I like the ssl-5 very much, but only if it sees a 500k volume pot. I used a JBjr. with a 250k quite a time, but a humbucker is quite different from a single coil with another sound. Recently i got a custom made pickup from boutique winder in Croatia. I laid all my experiences into these specs. My take of the Texas Special Bridge pickup: 7.2k PE with A2/A5 mags and a modern stagger.

A quarter pounder will get you a middier sound with more output than the SSL-5, but will lose a lot of the stratty sound that the SSL-5 has. It's kinda p90ish. The hot strat (SSL-3) will also be a little darker and middier than the SSL-5 with more output.

Other than I think you would have to go to the single coil sized humbuckers. Maybe a little '59, JB Jr. or one of the rails pickups.

I find the combination of SSL-5 middle and QP with a tap in bridge absolutely perfect. With vintage single in neck that set can do just about anything.

Re: seymour duncan SSL-5

hi guys,
big thanks for all your pickup recommendations, (quarter pounder, hot strat SSL-3, little 59, JBjr, hot rails, Custom Stack Plus, Hot Stack Plus )
i will even look at the strat size p90 ( STRA-BRO 90) i am sure i will make a choice from the list.

all the best guys,
bluesfloyd.
