Seymour vs Dimarzio

I have a SD 59 (2 wire) pick up that sounds awesome, and I have a Duncan Designed pick up which is a SD distortion, but I get a lot of 60 HZ noise.

I have (2) Dimarzio pick ups, a X2N (4 wire) and a Super distortion (4 wire). Both of these pick ups do not have any 60 HZ noise.

I have put copper foil tape in the guitar cavity, and grounded everything.

Is there something different in the construction of Dimarzio that makes them quiet?

Is there something I can do to the SD 59 to make it quiet?

Thanks
Rob

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

you shouldnt get 60 cycle noise with the 59. is the braided shield touching the copper shielding? is the dd pup noisy as well or just when the 59 is on?

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

The 59 shield is grounded to the copper tape.

The 59 and (2) DD's both give me 60 hz noise. I have replaced them with either of the DiMarzio's and both of the DiMarizio's are a lot quieter then the 59 and DD's.

I did not change anything in either guitar's I tried this in. Just swapped pick ups. And in (2) different guitars I get 60 hz hum when using the 59 or DD pick ups, but the (2) DiMarzio's are quieter.

It is weird to me, but that is why I am wondering if DiMarzio does something to their pick ups to help get rid of noise that SD or DD do not do?

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

Well, the 59 and DD are as quiet as any other humbuckers, so I am not sure what is going on here...they shouldn't have any hum at all.

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

Although unlikely that two SD pickups would have damaged wiring, that is where I would start looking. I have both of those same pickups currently, and they are as quiet as any other pickups I have ever used. I haven't had the DD installed in a while, but it came in a Korean Hamer guitar and it sounded killer, the louder the better. I've had 5 Dean Hardtail's (USA models) and 3 of them came with 59's in the neck. They were all as quiet as anything also.

It sounds like some sort of wiring or grounding issue to me. Maybe have a tech look at it. SD's are in no way inherently noisier than Dimarzio.

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

Why is your 59's braid grounded to the copper tape? It should go to the back of the pot.

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

The braid of the pick ups is soldered to the pot. Along with the input ground.

The copper foil I installed in each cavity is grounded.

Re: Seymour vs Dimarzio

60 cycle hum = something not grounded, or the coil is split.
