Seymourizer II?

I just stopped by a local used music gear place and puchaced an old beat up humbucker with a sticker on the baseplate that says "Seymourizer II" for $30. I have no idea what this thing is, I know that this is not a current Duncan production model.

What can you tell me about this pickup?

- When did they make these?
- Is it high/medium/low output?
- magnet: Alnico 2, 5, Ceramic?
- what is the overall tone and what is it comparable to as far as current models go..

In any case I'm excited to hook it up in something to see what it sounds like. The leads are cut pretty short, so I'll need to solder on some extensions to get it fired up :arms:

Re: Seymourizer II?

oh yeah...

so I guess it's a Distortion Neck? I suppose that could be a good bridge pickup.. not super hot, but hotter than a PAF.

Re: Seymourizer II?

i like it, i'm going to make a hybrid with one of those and a JB. i have a theory that they're wound relatively similarly (compared to other popular duncan hybrids), though obviously with different wire gauges, so should make for a very interesting tone.
just need another SH-4...

Re: Seymourizer II?

i hear it as having a similar 'looseness' kinda character in the mid-range but it's less focused on the upper mids. not as thick as a custom 5 though.
if you find the JB shrill or don't get along with it's low end, you may well prefer the seymouriser 2

Re: Seymourizer II?

So, I hooked it up in my parts-caster and... uh.. it's not working.
This thing is old and beat up. I think it's something wrong with grounding or something... i'm gettin a lot of hum (which reduces when I touch the strings or the jack or bridge) and a very weak signal.. My stock tele out-rocks it.. haha. both coils appear to be working, but who knows what's up. It could be as simple as my lead extension solders being done poorly.. or it could be something more intergral.

hmm....
before anyone robs you of a cool p/up, the noise sounds like a ground issue (where's your bare wire?) and if you have signal but it's really weak, check your magnet out; i'm guessing it's broken or has been dropped or similar
you can doo eet!

Re: Seymourizer II?

thanks doc.. I'll check it out. There's definitely some kind of ground issue just not sure where.. I know it's not a guitar problem since it was fine with the JB I had in there before.

Bare wire is going to the back of the pot - along with the green wire (I think this is correct)

The little wires under the tape on the look like a mess.. some look re-soldered.. I'll check out the mag too.. I didn't realize a broken mag was even possible.

I can doo eet! :bigthumb:

sorry, i meant the bare wire at the pickup end should be attached to the baseplate but may have come loose if it was treated nastily.
a broken ceramic mag is as they're quite brittle
good luck man

Calling Dr Ad:

I looked at it more closely last night. The magnet is in tact - although one of the corners is slightly chipped off. Not enough that I'd think it would effect the output.

The wires are another story.. where is the bare wire supposed to be grounded?

All the wires go into one side of the pickup in a bundle... and there's a bird's nest of wires on the other side of the pickup.. There are some bare spots where they've been soldered together - I wonder if some things have been touching that shouldn't have and hence causing a short and/or ground issues.

The whole thing is sticky and greasy from the tape and god knows what else.. but .. I'm determined to get this thing up n' running.

Sorry - my electronics skills are rudimentary at best. I can swap pickups and magnets and that's about it. I have no idea of the actual correct wiring of a pickup itself. Is there a diagram or picture somewhere for reference? (I don't know how to read schematics).
