SG bridge pickup recommendations

Just picked up a used SG. After playing with the band last night I'm thinking the stock 498T in the bridge is just not gonna do it for me. I usually like a JB in the bridge position of all my guitars but for the SG I'm open to suggestions. Is there a favorite bridge pickup for the SG?

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

Any of the Custom pups with an alnico 8 magnet. Certainly there are a lot of pups that can work great depending on the players personal requirements for tone. But the C8 can do just about anything in an SG and will sound great.

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

Put an A8 in your 498T and you'll get more mids, more beef, and none of the harsh high end.

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

So where would one get an A8 magnet to install in the 498T?

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

I remember the standard SD custom sh5 worked ok in mine, much better than stock alnico pup

Depends on what kind of music you're playing; I'll take alnicos over ceramics any day. Duncan makes production Customs with ceramic, A2 and A5. Members here also use A8, UOA5, and A4 in theirs. All are viable options.

It's true, for example with detuned guitar I always prefer ceramic, much tighter and crispier, alnico tends to muddy up, at least in my experience, with my guitars.
Anyway, in my SG I only tried the stock ceramic SH5 and it was way better than stock SG pickup (i don't know what it was) so it's the only opinion I can give.

I'd go with any of the Customs too. Get a host of magnets from AddictionFX, and swap 'em out (it's fun!). There are at least 2 or 3 that will sound awesome. I like roughcast A5 or and A8.

I'm not impressed with the PU's Gibson puts in their SG's, usually 498T/490R & '57 Classics. Pretty easy to find better PU's.

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

So as the OP here I just remembered that the guy I got the SG from a couple of weeks ago casually mentioned something about the guitar has Godwood pickups. But I looked at 2 different SG's he had and I may have got them mixed up. Now I really want to pull the pickups and see what they are. Stay tuned.

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

If you like the JB, you might also like the UOA5 Custom in your SG. It is smoother than the 498t, and not as scooped in the mids as the Custom5.

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

So I pulled the pickups and I'm as confused as ever. They could be anything. No Gibson. No WCR. No embossing on the back. No stickers. Nothing. Had some green and red sharpie like lines on the back and that's it. Guess I'll put a JB in the bridge when I get the money and call it a day. Bridge measure 10.12K and neck 8.3K.

Re: SG bridge pickup recommendations

Any spare magnets around? If so you could still try some swapping for the bridge until you get the JB. I take it you like the neck?

hold on. show a pic of both backs here.
these could be boutique pickups. i think of Wagner WCR pickups. maybe American Steele Set (Crossroads neck, Godwood bridge).
here is a opical reference of the markings for WCR pickups

Yep looks like the American Steele set. Not gonna have any pictures though as I have the guitar all back together.
Actually I think it's a Godwood set.
