sg bridge pickup to drive a vht

Greetings all,

I recently acquired a vht sig:x, and I'm using it with my bone stock '90 sg special (I think it's a pretty bright guitar). The problem is that while the amp is so good, it revealed that the bridge pickup driving it could be better. The stock pickup sounds a little thin to my ears. I'm using the amp for a hardcore/punk/metal type sound, and am looking to avoid the sound being crackly and fizzy. Just some nice, clear, heavy distortion (which is an oxymoron if I've ever heard one :scratchch).

I did some searching, and found a bunch of suggestions for sg's, but none that apply specifically to this sound. I suspect that a potted lower-gain pickup would fit this situation, but any suggestions would be great. Here's a short list of what I think might work:

AP2b
59b
brobucker
rio grande bbq
something from wcr?

What do you guys think? If you think I'm way off, that's alright too. It's been a long time since I posted here, but I lately I've been feeling the modding bug coming back in full force... Thanks everyone!

Custom......for metal with versitility. It turned my SG's into monsters. I can throw all the gain I want at it and it stay's clear. Plus it's the modders dream pickup. I think this pickup has been modded more than any other Duncan. A simple magnet swap can put this pup in just about any guitar.

The Sig X should have all the gain you need and VHT amps are known for clean/clear but super HEAVY tones so I don't think that will be an issue, I say just pick a pickup you like and roll with it...if it were me and I needed a pickup for an SG I'd quite likely go 59.

Thanks everyone! I'd like to try the low-output route first, so I'm gonna order a 59b and some new pots/caps. I'll let everyone know how it turns out!

Re: sg bridge pickup to drive a vht

Just an update - I installed a 59b in my sg, along with cts 500k pots and orange drop caps with vintage wiring. I know that it would have been more scientific to install things one at a time, but it's such a pain on an sg that I just did everything all at once.

I'm pretty happy with the new setup. It's pretty full sounding, not overly trebly, and much more fun (I guess you could say it has a better feel?) than the stock pickup was. I like the results of a lower output pup pushing a heavier amp, which I never thought to try before but works out very well IMO. Thanks for the all the help everyone! This'll keep the GAS at bay for a while :scratchch
