SG saved from a life of ick

So my buddy Mike had this fugly but really solid '74 SG. It had a refrigerator white refin at some point then was stripped and cheapo refin'd to this....it lived a charmed life but....

One night during a gig last year some one knocked it off the stand while siting on stage during a break and it suffered a really nasty headstock break. Even as SG's go it was bad. So it ended coming to me to get a 2nd chance at life. So off to my friend Steve DeMarino's shop toget the headstock put back together. He did an awesome job with the repair and then it was my turn to make it look like something from Marc Bolan's wardrobe closet.

Why that's Plum Crazy! Crank up some Inner Angus!

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

That's cool. I love SG's and need more than one. Though the Mrs may say otherwise...lol.

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

Sweet! I have two '74s. That looks awesome and I am glad that old soldier is getting a new life and a snazzy finish.

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

It looks like something from the funk/disco era, but I mostly like it because I don't recall Gibson ever offering that finish on an SG. The closest they came was the purple SG Futura as far as I know.

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

Very, very cool!

I love the Wattage treatment but more than that love seeing an old guitar many folks would just scrap getting a new life!!!!

Very nice work brother.

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

Glad you guys like it. When my buddy called me and told me the headstock broke and that no one where he is was up for the repair he sounded like his cat got runover by a car. He's had that thing for ages and it is definitely his favorite guitar by a long shot.

I was really glad he liked it since he kind of didn't know exactly what it would look like. I wanted to do the refin so it looked as if it had been like that since the 70's. There were too many imperfect things about the guitar to do it as a pristine, like new type finish. This worked out way better. It fit the character of the guitar and the guy who owns it.

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

Nice. Very disco looking indeed. I'd expect some gold hardware to truly pimp it out though... That and/or a mirrorball looking pickguard :).

Re: SG saved from a life of ick

I wouldn't know what to wear when playing a purple guitar.

Ruffles or lace. But not both.

OP: I'm not picking on you. That SG is badass. :headbang:

Hey, I've met that SG. Scott, is that the same color it was when I saw it, or did you re-re-paint it with the leftovers from the purple P-Bass?
