SG style w/ebony board w/ IM1 or Custom 8

I have an SG-style, mahogany body and 24 fret mahogany neck (ebony fret board / 25.5" scale neck) with one bridge HB -- the plain strings sing nicely, but the wound strings seem a little "wooly" or lacking piano like detail -- would the IM1 be preferable over the Custom 8 -- I play fusion, jazz, blues and mid-gain rock?

I've got a customised IM1 which uses an alnico 2 magnet and has a tighter low end than the standard IM1. I reckon you go with the customised IM1 design as the 'stock' custom shop design may still be a little loose and wooly in the lo end. I if you're inerested I can pm you the job number for it. I'll have my review written up for the Duncan blog soon, and hopefully it'll be published not too long after.

That's interesting -- thank you; I would love to have the job number ...

How would you tighten up the bottom end of a Custom 8, though?

Adjusting the pole pieces on the humbucker. Or try adjusting the height.

I have looked into the height and screws and there is some affect there -- the C8 seems to like being very close -- not sure this is the best solution.

The C8 and the IM1 are really quite different. If you want thick and saturated, the C8 would be the way to go. The stock IM1 is more focused and articulate. A possible middle ground could be a Full Shred.
