Re: SG with Phat Cats

I found it essential to change the magnets. The hexes should add tightness and defined bass.

Re: SG with Phat Cats

PG is already pretty tight. Hexs may make it sound thin.

The biggest Phat Cat improvement, AFAIK, is different mags. Hex poles would be a small refinement.

I plan on getting a pair of Phat Cats, now when you say change the mags, what are you going from and too, and what change is it make tonally?

Re: SG with Phat Cats

What is it that hex poles do, as opposed to screws? Can any pickup be converted from one to the other?

Re: SG with Phat Cats

Also this SG uses the crappy Gibson circuit board. I jury rigged the wiring with some old PC plug crimps and jammed it in the slots. Works fine.

Re: SG with Phat Cats

Hex poles in phat cats do a good job at taming the bass. You can tighten the bottom end up while retaining the playing dynamics of the A2 magnets with them installed. However they may not be your cup of tea if you like thick strings. The last phat cat with hex poles I used also had a set of 9 gauge strings and it got a really nice boost in the distorted aggression department.
