SH-11 Noisey compared to PG

My Guitar Weeps

I bought a new SH-11 (nickel cover) and it's one that came braided wire and not 4 conductor. It was the first braided solder job that I've done but I checked everything twice.....the solder joint looked good but I noticed that the pickup was pretty noisey. I could actually touch the pickup with my hand to get most of the hum and noise to go away. Bad grounding maybe???? All connections look fine, so I took it out and dropped in the PGb and don't really have a problem so to speak. Any ideas?

sounds like the cover/pup isnt well grounded

I agree. Make sure the outter braid has a good connection to ground.

Hotter wound pickups will naturally be noisier than vintage wound (the PG is slightly overwound vintage) in some cases so don't forget to take that in to account.

I soldered the outer braid to the top of the bridge vol pot and and the hot to the lug....heck I put enough solder over the braid tocompletely go over the outside of the braid so it was soldered on both sides if that makes any sense. I beleive I had a couple of other grounds in that solder pond on top of the pot. Should the braid be soldered by itself?

Watch for too much solder. It doesn't take much to hold it there. As long as it's a solid connection it should be fine. With braided I usually solder the center hot to the lug from the back side (pot casing side) and then solder the braid to the back.
