SH-14 vs. SH-5 - Duncan's Demo video misleading....?

Hey guys,.. it's been quite a while :)

I'm VERY familiar with the TB/SH-5 as I have that in several of my guitars, but I was kind of on the hunt for something different to try out and stumbled across the Duncan demo video with the guy playing the Purple translucent PRS and demo'ing the SH-14, SH-5, and the SH-11:

I love the lead tone in the first section which is the SH-14... that is spot on for "Me"... but the SH-5 section is good in it's own right, but to me sounds a bit more Vintage'y in comparison to the SH14... Almost makes me think that the sections are possibly labeled incorrectly or something given the fact of the Mag differences ( A5 vs Ceramic)...?

Any thoughts on this?

Like I said, I'm very familiar with the SH/TB-5, and I use those as well as the Screamin' Demon alot. I used to use the SH/TB-6's and the JB's alot as well,..but I'm sort of over those at the moment.

Music/Style is mostly anywhere from Blues/Classic Rock through Hard Rock.. no metal or thrash stuff here..

Guitars are mostly either "Super Strat" styles or LP's ... Most are rosewood FB's ..

Thanks
Rick

Well, ceramics have more sizzle in the top-end, and vintage PAF's often had that stinging top-end which remind so many of a good Tele (but with added girth)......so maybe thats what has got you making the association.

Nice playing, but I think that demo is particularly useless because the three guitar lines aren't even close to showing off the same type of playing.

I agree,.. if you're going to "Demo" multiple items the test base needs to be as identical as possible - That being said we can only assume that the amp and recording process were the same on all three samples and that the only difference was the pickups,.. again an assumption :(

I guess I'll pick up a SH-14 and give it a whirl, I've got a LTD EC-1000 Deluxe that has EMG's in it,.. uhhg those things are HORRIBLE! I've got a Hot Rodded duncan set (JB/Jazz) set to go in it,. but might just go the SH-14 route on this one.

You might want to look at the full shred as well, it’s the same wind as the custom-5 but with Allen screws for a little better highs.

Better highs?

In every single comparison test I've listened to, the Full Shred is always the mid-heaviest pickup with the least highs out of every other pickup in the test.
