SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Would be curious about this, too. I think it might feedback pretty easily, in good and bad ways.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Hey Mincer! Yeah maybe hey. I have a pearly gates bridge (around 8k) in a 339 and I still get feedback if Im using distortion or overdrive. I've even had weird experiences with stock Epiphone PAF type pickups - notably using an Orange amp.. But there's a good chance I was just too close to the amp, we didn't have much space.
I was thinking to just go with a 59 in the bridge then!

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

We're talking about the 59/Custom hybrid here, right?
I think that it would work fine in a 335. Sure, you might have to dial back the tone a bit, but I think that it would work.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

The tone is probably fantastic. The worry would be possible feedback (the bad kind) at stage volume. It might not even be a problem, as the pickup isn't THAT hot. It's just a concern. For bedroom playing or recording it's probably awesome. My personal preference would probably be to swap in an A4 or UOA5 magnet, but ymmv.

If you try it be sure to come back and tell us about the results.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Well, feedback is always a concern with high preamp gain, high volume and a semi-hollow. Some people avoid it by just facing the amp away from them, or jut being far away from the amp. I not ever play with that much gain, so I use unpotted Antiquities with my Eastman 335 clone- I get feedback, but only the good kind.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

I have a BB3 in my 335 and it feeds back pretty easily, even on larger bar stages. I have a Schecter 339 style with an SH16 that is chambered instead of ply and is ok with lower levels of gain, heavier rock tones require a lot of attention to volume knobs. I frequently leave my neck volume rolled off and quickly flick the toggle when I'm not playing.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

It really depends on your amp, speakers, settings, if yiu use pedals, etc.
I played a 335 with a really hot bridge pickup with no problems at all. It is definitely worth trying the Hybrid!

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

With a warm, rich unoriented magnet (A2 or UOA5), the '59/Custom would be very nice in a semi-hollow.

In the mid 2000s I met a guy who'd installed a Distortion in a 60s vintage ES-335 back in the 80s. Not only did it not have feedback issues, it sounded amazing.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Well, a hot pickup in concert with high gain and high volume can cause feedback.

I agree, but a semi-hollow at high volume with any amount of gain feeds back very easily. Seems kind of like juggling 6 balls, then deciding not to try 7 because you might drop one :)

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

If you use a decent noise gate, you should be able to stop any unwanted feedback by muting the strings.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Here is an Epiphone Dot Studio with a JB (way hotter than a 59/Custom). The amp is a 100 watt Marshall combo. The squeel you hear early on is the Blackstar/Ibanez on the right. Check out 2:20 or so for some cool rockstar moves. At the end of the bridge / intro solo I point the guitar right at the amp. I think you'll be fine...but that's me.

By the way - It was loud here...

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

Ted Nugent Birdland high gain and volume. Anyone who saw him live in the late 70's knows you will be fine!
Thinking hard about dropping the Hybrid I have on hand into my Carvin AE 185 semi hollow.

Re: SH-16 in Semi-hollow body 335

I would think the Hybrid would be fine in the Carvin- it isn't quite like a 335 or Byrdland in it's hollowness.
