SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Thanx a lot man.. ive never used either of them so i wasnt really sure what to do.. i just didnt want to end up with a pickup that has a lot of highs and a REALLy sharp tone that just hurts your ears when u crank it live.. something iwht a rounder fuller tone is the way to go

remember the return policy, if you mess up on your choice, just send it back within the time period.

I'd say the JB and distortion are 2 you should stay away from in that case.

Start looking at a custom.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Yea i had a chance to try them out this weekend and im leaning towars the SH-5 custom... it just seemed to be more of my style.. however when i tried it, it had an SH-2 jazz in the neck and that sounded awsome so now im thinkin of changing my neck pickup 2 lol

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

definitely get the custom. I had a JB, then Distortion, then Custom just as someone else mentioned (lol) and i think they are all cool, the distortion is just way too compressed and grainy IMO. I prefered the JB over the distortion. Then i tried the Custom and loved this pickup, doesn't do leads quite like a JB but it does them fine, but the rhythm is AWESOME! More balanced than either the JB or Distortion. And the distortion does have a high mid spike just like the JB!

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Custom or Distortion but I would go with Distortion. has great punch and crunch. The JB is great in the right guitar and the Custom is probably my second favorite pickup its just not as agressive as a Distortion.

To me the Distortion is as close to active as you get in a passive pickup.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Freakin sweet guys.. thanks, seems the in general most ppl would prefer the custom over the JB... so i think im totally gonna go for the custom... and maybe a PGN or a 59.. any thoughts on which would be a better combo??

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

The SH-6 is more in your face, with great string to string definition. The JB has more grind to it.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

I've a tremonti se as well, neck is 59 and tried both JB and Distortion for bridge.
The JB is too thin and the treble is killing my ears but the low works well with high gain amp and metal playing. However, the JB doesn't balance well with 59 to my liking and the distortion is much better thus in more situation the low is too tight and muddy but you can always adjust the pickup height and bass from the amp.
I always wanted something in between JB and Distortion, and a lot of guys recommended custom but I think a more balance pickup might be better off since the tremonti se wood tone is warm and dark.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Okay.I am biased and love the Distortion. But that has it's reason! The custom is a great PU but i can#t compare ti with Distortion agressive ,biting ,ripping tone.A screaming harmonic is pure Rockn' roll on a Distortion equipped guitar! And nothing matches the output qualities.
If you are into Pinch Harmonics ,agressive Rythm (Hear Annihilator. You will understand what i mean) and some searing lead tone .go with the Distortion.Nobody regrets the Distortion ,just want to upgrade (i went to PATB2 ,wich is a differnet kind of Distortion).
Distortion is one of the Kings on the planet of PUs.The custom is great and has it's qualities , but not as significant and ego pumped as the DistortioN!

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Alright im playin out of a PRS tremonti se mostly metal and hard rock.. ive got a 59 in the neck. whats the better bet?

To me, it's a draw. I hear the Distortion is beefy but can't clean up very well at all, versus I've owned the JB and I love it (it can get decent clean sounds). It's really up to you, but me, I'd use the JB.

....i thought the guy from annihilator uses the custom.

anyhow, i have both the JB and DD in my guitars, and i prefer the JB 80% of the time. mind you, im running the JB with a 300k volume pot, so it sounds darker than the DD. it also (regardless of pot value, in my experience) lacks the scratchy/grainy qualities that the DD can have, which is another plus. the JB is smoother. the place where the DD excels though is when your amp is cranked to high hell. then the tightness of the lowend really picks up and sounds great while preventing things from getting muddy.

Jeff Waters told that he uses DD for the Rythm ,and Custom for the solo work!

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Only The JB ice pick! The Distortion is not ice picky at all!

The JB is not always an ice pick. It depends on the guitar. On a soft maple body, boy, it's a huge ice pick, but on other guitars it's usually not. Then again, I'm not the most experienced around.

even on a biig mah body was ice pick.there are some Frequencies it produces ,and no mather what wood ,it let's them out.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Between the Distortion and JB (and I've used both), I'd go Distortion. Contrary to a previous post, the Distortion cleans up nicely.

If it were my guitar, I'd go Custom.

So if it's always an ice pick, that's why it sounds excellent in my guitar? That's why a lot of the Duncan-loaded guitars come with it, and why they have high customer ratings? That's why Jeff Beck uses it? I mean, no offense, but you're opening up a HUGE can of worms. In fact, tonight I was ripping a sample of some playing around with my ESP (Hot Rodded combo, i.e. JB bridge) and I didn't get ice pick. Ever heard of Megadeth? Dave Mustain used the JB for virtually all their past albums, and only recently went active (but the actives he picked were "voiced like the Jazz and JB" according to the SD news clip).

It could be your amp EQ.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

on another note i was just wondering what a good pickup would be to go in the neck of a PRS singlecut with a duncan custom in the bridge?

PG is a popular combo with a Custom
